Runout addicts? Hi, my name is Dan... Need copy of the 12 steps...

That Gracey neck turning motor is slick. I'm all for saving time. With a 3 month old daughter and 2 year old son, it's a requirement. Is that trimmer able to be used on different calibers? Didn't see anything to suggest that. Either way, thanks for the link. Heard of Gracey trimmers, but favored the Giraud when I briefly compared them and hadn't seen any Gracey products since.

I just ordered the Lee collet neck die and a front AR rider, flat block for AR forearm that sits on front rifle rest (that I don't own). Ha ha. Will order two smaller mandrels from Lee so I can test various neck tensions out without breaking out the emory paper. Since this will be for an auto loader, not sure the provided mandrel will suffice.

Now I just need to get my Forster Ultra fixed and back to NC. I'm eager to see how my 21st Century gauge gets along with my new friends Forster and Lee.

Any opinions on the Caldwell Fire Control front rest? Shooting on my buddies Caldwell BR tomorrow, but need my own soon. Thanks for any suggestions.

+1 on the Lee Collet Die and the Redding Body Die. If you go that route (I would and do). . .

Good luck with your back surgery Dan.

Thanks man. Not too worried about the surgery. I suspect when I exhaustively rid myself of runout and see no difference on the target, that will hurt more. Ha ha. ;D

All joking aside, I'm just lucky to be alive. Had a bad car accident a month after my son was born two years back. Ambulance (empty thank God), pulled out in front of me at highway speed. Thankfully nobody else was hurt. This injury stemmed from that.

Figured since I'm going to be on the bench, pun intended, I should use my time wisely. Heck, I just need the distraction to be honest. My wife and I are both RN's and it's hard not to worry about a major surgery being so aware of all the potential sideways business that can occur.

Normally it would be difficult for me to delve so deep into anything like this. Sure, I reload single stage rifle and several other calibers on my Dillon 550, I shoot once a week or thereabouts. We take the raft to Tennessee fly fishing and camping several weekends a year. Each fall we float a remote river in Alaska, fishing and camping for 7-14 days, covering 100-150 miles of river.

But work, kids, wife, don't usually allow me to spend several hours a day to myself doing anything. This is like studying for a college exam. This isn't casual reading for people with a tolerance for mediocrity. With any luck, March will have me at the range with a bit more pep in my step and a box of straight bullets.

With what I got on kitchen counter to shoot today, thems is banana rounds as I have heard them called. I could take ten of them and make a circle. Hah. Sorry for rambling, a combination of being up all night with an infant, Vicodin, and coffee. I hate folks that share too much. Usually.

Anyone familiar with the Caldwell fire control front rest? I'm sharing my buddies rest again today, but I need one badly. Anything under $250-300.

Thanks for all the help here. More valued than you might think.

joe R,

Having said that, two things that will improve your brass preparation are:
1. flash hole de-burring and
2. neck turning.

Precision is an expensive mistress and she's a bitch. ;)

End quote...

No kidding man. I'm up for it. The only reason I'm interested is because it's such a challenge.

As for neck turning, suggest a tool. Amyone using 21st Century mini lathe?

Dan

Most people turn necks with the hand held turners, some people use the 21st Century mini lathe. Both of those solutions are workable. I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing well and I found that the best way to turn necks is a Gracey Neck Shaver. I can turn 100 case (.308) in about 15 minutes. It does an excellent job and gives me more of the one thing no one can buy: time.

Here's a link to the best neck shaving tool there is http://www.matchprep.com/shaver.htm like everything else in this game precision is not accidental or free.

Kindest regards,

Joe

Joe, what kind of consistency can you obtain on neck wall thickness with the Gracey?
