Running out of elevation

Gold $$ Contributor
Set up is a Sako .338 Lapua, 20 MOA base, Badger Med rings, March 8-80 scope. Zeroed at 100 it runs out of elevation for 1000 yds. Scope has 60 moa internal elevation. This is on my buddie's rifle an doesn't make sense to me unless he has used a lot of elevation to zero
Suggestions?
Thanks
Bill

Burris Signature Zee rings (w/inserts) or the newer Tactical Signature rings (w/inserts).

Not certain, but I'd make sure they hold up under a 338 recoil.

I have a R700 that needs a 30 rail to get to 1000 with both of my old NF scopes. Just the way the top of the receiver was milled.

You are correct, he has used up his elevation. I'm not up on the 338L drop, but 30 moa should be enough for 1000 yd. How much MOA do you left after Zeroing? One of rifles is 14 MOA from the bottom. I have 20 MOA in Burris Zee rings, but need more. I need a 20 MOA base and 10 MOA in the ring to get close to the bottom. Burris Sig Zee rings are the best way to add Elev.

The Zee will hold most anything, and will not leave ring marks on your scope. I have seen them on 50 BMG.

Something don't sound right. I have a 338 Lapua Imp and only need 20 1/4 minutes to get on 1000. That is with a burger 300 and I am not hot-rodding them. Something must be off. Matt

I agree, it doesn't sound right to me either. He was using 250's close to 3000. I will put the scope back to neutral and see what is left. He had a ATACR on it with no problems but that has 120moa elevation. Windage is perfect at neutral.
Thanks to all for your help. Merry Christmas.

Bill,

Crazy thought. Is it possible to install the 20 moa base on backwards on this rifle. Good luck.

Would have to look at the mount screw spacing and configuration of the mount. The Sako rifle comes with a factory 20moa base and there are few after market options. He may need a custom made base.

how close is the scope to mechanical center? If a scope has lots of windage on it to achive zero it will reduce the amount of available elevation

It is mounted on a rail. What are you suggesting about ring placement? As far to the rear as possible with the rings?

To take advantage of the 20 MOA slope, the rings will have to be spaced to a location that gives you a true 20 MOA. It's possible, the rings are too close together.

His rings from base to center are the same height and they are positioning what amounts to a straight cylindrical tube. The rings are mounted to a rail that’s flat over its full length topside but it’s an inclined rail higher at the rear relative to the barrel’s bore center in how the rail is mounted to the receiver. So, what’s ring spacing got to do with anything in this case?

That is some funny $hit. Way too funny.

When you're done checking this, go out to your car and check your muffler bearings and your blinker fluid.
