Running out of a discontinued Powder

I have been using Accurate 3100 powder in my Remington 700 Varmint Special in .243 since I bought it in the 1980's. I have about 25 loads left in the last 8 lbs. I bought at least 10-12 years ago. It has been shooting fantastic groups using the 75 grn Vmax's and the 87 grn. Vmax's. Rifle was rebuilt about 25 years ago and not shot much. I had it tuned up a couple of months ago and it has been shooting some of the best groups I have ever shot. So my dilemma is they don't make the Accurate 3100 powder anymore and I need a replacement. With the cost of powders these days I don't want to go down the rabbit hole and spend lots of $$$$ on powder that just wont work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Additional info is : Remington 700 in .243. Rock Creek Barrel with a 8.5 Twist. Barrel is 26 inches. Heavy Barrel. Shoots the 75 grn Hornady Vmax . Thanks for any replies.

You don't have to dwell on this one long - with those bullet weights, IMR 4064 and Varget will work very nicely for you. IMR 4350 will also work but I prefer that powder for bullets 85 grains and heavier.

I've been shooting this great caliber since the mid 60's and reloading for it since the late 69–70-time frame. Those powders have worked very well over a range of bullet weight from 70 to 85 in every 243 Win I've owned which is a bunch.

The very best bullet I have ever shot in the 243 Win is the 85 Sierra BTHP. This can be used a dual-purpose bullet for varmints / predators and deer. This bullet shoots like a match bullet with excellent terminal performance. IMR 4064 and / or Varget work extremely well with this bullet.

Since those aforementioned bullets have been difficult to find in the last two years, I've been experimenting with the 75 Vmax with excellent results with Varget.

IMR 4895 / H 4895 will also produce good results with bullet 75 grain and lighter in my experience. But I would first try IMR 4064 or Varget.

I emailed Shooters world a couple yrs ago as to bringing back 3100 and was told that they were gonna start importing S-071 Lovex as a SW powder but the date came and went and it isnt here yet. I would try some N-160 or N-150. I've had great results with N-140 with light bullets

75g-Win 760 or AA2700

87g-IMR 4831 or R#19

H4350 will do both bullet weights in spades, but AA2700 is the coolest burning powder in the range that will work with both powders.

AA2700 is available now, so is Big Game and Hunter

it's a ball powder but, Ramshot Hunter Is my recommendation.
In my testing of lighter bullets, It performed right along side
H4831SC and gave a better case fill. It has been cheaper and
easier to find. Second recommendation would be Reloder 16
for a stick powder.

Why call Accurate, the people that made A3100 for Accurate is Lovex, and Seabee Ken is right it is not close it is the same thing. I would love to find some for my 25-06, But I can't find any. I don't know if there has ever been any here or its just gone now. When i talked to them at Accurate the guy said lovex would not sell it cheap enough for Accurate to make a profit.

My vintage Rem. 700 Varmint spl. shoots H-414 great and prints small groups!
Mine too...But it's also discontinued, Win. 760 is supposed to be the same though.
I've switched to N-160 for the lighter 75-87 weights and N-560 for the 108 class weights. Both VV powders shoot MUCH cleaner and smaller groups than with the previous 414 loads ( didn't think that was possible).

Ironically, H414 has been discontinued as well. W760 is reportedly the same powder though. There are likely better more modern options.

Later... Ha. That'll teach me to reply before reading all the way thru a thread.

H414 and W760 are the same powder only packaged by 2 companies. If you look at load data it's always identical.

If you're looking for a ball powder that will work just as good as the Accurate 3100 look no farther than H-414 / Win.760 (Same Powders as mentioned above).

Accurate 4350 is also a ball powder and will work just as good as AA-3100.

CFE-223 is another good ball powder that will work for your combination.

Ramshot Hunter is another ball powder that will work good for you.

Ramshot Big Game is another ball powder that will work.

Even Hodgdon's ball H-380 powder would work.

Winchester's (discontinued) Supreme 780, (also ball powder) you could use that as well.

I also wish Hodgdon didn't discontinue their ball H-450 powder. It worked great with 80-105 gr bullets.

If I had to use a non ball powder, my first choice would be H-4831sc.. I use 47 gr with 80 gr Berg. Varmint, and it's a 1 hole load.

There is at least 2 dozen stick powders that would work great with 75 V-max in the 243win.

There are plenty of reloading manuals online from Barnes, Hodgdon, Vihtavuori, Alliant, Speer and probably a few more.

H450 is good. I use it with my 100gr btsp load. I still have 3 pounds and that will be more than enough for my lifetime. 47 gr. h4831 with Sierra 85 gr. Is very good though.

I also use the Sierra 85 gr HPBT Gameking # 1530 with 46.5 gr of H-4831sc :)
That Sierra 85 gr is stupid accurate and on deer it ALWAYS delivers a DRT.

The only more accurate (not by much & only consistency wise) bullet I shoot in one of my 243win's is the 80 gr Berger Varming with 47 gr of H-4831sc.
