Ruger No.1 horizontal stringing. .243win

Have had a problem with horizontal stringing on my ruger no.1 since day 1 and I took the walnut stock off and put a bell and Carlson stock on it and have read and tried all kinds of tricks to get it to shoot well ( shimming the forearm hanger, floating barrel ect.) All the stuff I have read about the no.1's inherent accuracy flaws were vertical string. I have read anything about people's horizontal stringing issues. Can be as much as 3 inches and is almost always to the right one out of 3 shots. Any help would be awesome!

Howdy !

Just for grins, can you tell us your cartridge, bullet wt, barrel length/twist et al ?

Has the Wx been the same, everytime you shot ( temps near the same, close to the same amount of wind, humidity; etc )

Please let us know.

With regards,

Shooting .243win with 105gr. Amax shooting IMR 4350 barrel I believe is 22" and not sure on twist ratio but it is the factory barrel. Weather has been comparable pretty much everytime I've done any adjusting of cartridge work.

Chances are the twist in the barrel isn't enough to stabilize the 105! Do you know how to figure out your twist rate with a cleaning rod, patch jag and patch? If so, measure your twist and let us know!

My experience with several Ruger No. 1's is that the fore end pressure is off the charts. Remove the fore end screw completely and shoot a three-shot group with the rifle just resting in the fore end on a sandbag. My guess is the group will be about 9" lower than before. I simply put a small washer inside the fore end, over the fore end bolt, to keep the wood from touching the barrel when tightened. Good luck. I love No. 1's ...

I've had a couple of #1s one was a 458 mag wasn't much fun to shoot. the other was a schutzen rifle 32 miller short. I did the forestock different than the factory. they put the screw in at a 45* angle I put mine in at 90*. if you will bed your forestock to the hanger with spacer material between the barrel and the action. you'll need something thicker between the barrel and the forearm than you need between it andf the action. in other words free float the fore stock. you should get rounder groups.
Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I have placed several different shim under the hanger and shot several groups. The first shim was .056" and I placed the foreend back on the gun and it shot a 1.3" group and almost not horizontal. I then shot it with a larger shim which free floated the barrel (the first shim still had lots of forend pressure on the barrel). The second shim was about .102" and it shot all over the place. Maybe 4" group at 100yrds. I then proceded to shoot the same loads at 100yrds with the shims in and no forend with it resting on my ood block rest with a towel on it. The groups moved about 3-4" right with the forend removed completely even with the larger shim with has free floated the barrel. Just seems like something really funky and unaccounted for is going on. I really appreciate all your help! With my wood stock I was able to put touching holes on 2 shots and one horizontal floater of about 1" several times and since the new stock has gone on, it has been hideous.

And I just realized that I said I am using IMR 4350 when I am actually using H4350

Not quite sure where you are placing the shims with the forend off.A few suggestions.Freefloat the barrel with the stock screw place a small "O" ring on the screw after it goes through the stock. When snugged up you should be able to run a sheet of paper around the barrel and slide down toward the action, until it stops at the hanger.Rest the forend on your rest, behind the forend screw.I dont believe the barrel has a fast enough twist to consistantly stabilize those 105s.Try 95gr
Sierra match Kings, sorted by ogive,at about .005-.008 off the lands with H4831sc if you have any, otherwise you should do better with those mods.TRIGGER?? My K1V came with a great trigger .Broke like glass,no creep,or overtravel, but it was 31/2lbs.I shot some good groups (204r),but the consentration factor was tiresome.I changed to a Moyer trigger, but still too
heavy(21/2lb).Will do more work on that.Keep us informed.

In my experence usually horizontal stringing is a bullet seating issue. A lots of time with #1s we go after foreend myself included. But at the end of it all usually vertical is powder charge- horizontal is bullet seating. Herb.

had a iv in 6mpg i bought used ..sold as a i hole shooter..beautiful wood..shot about 1.5 " @ 100m..no matter what load...spent $400 to " accrues it" with that gunsmiths propriety front end hanger and a $ 200 installed kepplinger trigger..now shot .5" @ 100m..but the gun never fit..i was all over it to get a sight picture,,,tried ruger extension rings..better but not perfect..the wood was to pretty to cut..i finally gave up on ruger #1's and moved on

I had a #1 in 22-250 which strung vertically. I fixed it pretty much by Inserting a piece of fairly stiff polyurethane rubber between the hanger and the barrel. It should be a tight fit! These things aren't target rifles so don't expect one hole accuracy from them.
Your other problem is the barrel twist is probably marginal for 105gr bullets.

Mine (Shilen lapped 1-9, 223 Rem) will hold moa with 3 to 5 shots, but after that as the barrel heats up, shots climb high & slightly to the right.

Thanks for all the help guys! I am going to do some testing with different powders and all first off and go from there after I free float the barrel. Will keep you posted this week

thought of something I didn't think of on first post. if your barrel is a sporter it may shoot better with pressure on fore arm right at front end. try different thickness shims. if you find what works bed that spot with a small "dot" shim.

I think I may be getting somewhere. I shot 2 new loads yesterday. one was 90gr Nosler BT with 46.5gr of H4831sc and It through a perfect 4"vertical string and then another load that was the same bullet with 47.5gr of H4831sc and I got a perfect 3" horizontal string so my guess is that my load is somewhere in the middle of those 2. I also put a 1" steel beaded block at the end of my for end and sanded my Bell and Carlson stock down and got it free floated up to that block. When I get some more time, I will be doing more bullet testing.
