Ruger American Rimfire

Mine was horrible for accuracy. So I swapped in a barrel from shaw that fits a rpr. Now itis shooting right at 1/2" at 50 yds. Sometimes better. With CCI SV. I also put it in a boyds prairie hunter stock. Next it is going to be bedded. Just have not found the time to do it.

And YES, you can change the barrel on these if you are skilled enough.

Not to much to brag about accuracy but I found a shaw match barrel and a timney trigger at midway in there clearance section. Now this little gun is my long gong gun, We shoot from 25 to 300 yards. Best 300 yard is 11 out of 12 shots20250910_111114.jpg

On the Rim Fires I have found that the action screws holding the stock down play a huge role in the accuracy game. Try doing a ladder test shooting 5 shot groups while torquing the action screws down until you find the sweet spot. Try in increment of 5 pounds until you get something to work with then try small increments above and below that. Other things are rimfires don't like to be cleaned until accuracy starts to fail. And lastly always bed the stock. Good luck .
With my front action screw tight when I tighten the screw at the trigger guard , the barrel moves about a 1/4 inch at the forend . So I don't think it is worth missing with the plastic stock . I have been trying to elamiting the cock on closing and getting a new wood stock. And I do have a Shilen 22RF barrel just seating around collecting dust .This RAR is just something to play with . Being I'm to old to shoot a match any more.

I think most of us who don't shoot rimfire "seriously", are pretty clueless about what it takes to achieve match accuracy with our ammo and equipment.

I've always thought that you guys should be allowed at least one "mulligan" on your scored target to compensate for the ammo thing.;) jd

I doubt it is the barrel that is moving, it is more likely flex in the cheap plastic stock.

Mine will keep up with most sporter rifles in the original plastic stock without modifications. That is it will average an inch at 50 yards. If you feel you want to spend the money to shoot smaller groups. The stock to an adjustable stock, the barrel to an aftermarket bull barrel with a match chamber, and the trigger to an aftermarket adjustable one, and don't forget the rest to hold it study. Been there, done that. The gun weighs 10 lbs and at current prices, I've got an easy $1000 invested that I can't get back.
Also don't forget practice ammo at 10.00 a box.

Right now I’ve got it down to about 3/4” at 50 off a bog pod with CCI SV. I guess I shouldn’t ask for much better with that gun. Just wanted to see if anyone found any decent solutions to its issues.
Pull the barrel and cut of the chamber and refit with a match reamer.

One thing I forgot to mention, was I shoot 4 days a week 2 to 3 hours a day and dry fire the rest of the time. I recently, got a paying job and a single parent mother to support for a hobby because it's cheaper.

Art, during my lifetime I've been in and out of shooting several times.
I grew up hunting fishing and trapping. I served in the military during the Vietnam war. Through the 90"s, I shot nra service rifle. I got into shooting this time about 2012. The last time I went to the range I shot 50 rds of 22's, 10-5 shot groups. 7 were under ,5. The reason 3 were over .5 is likely I am tires of shooting small groups.
The single parent mom is real but that is a story for another forum and another day.

Our group bought 4 RPRs. We tried most brands ( Eley, SK, Lapua, CCI, Rem., Fed. Old Wolf ME. TAC 22 )and an inch inch and a half was about the best they would do at 50 yds.. We sold or traded them off. 2 guys bought CZs and are very happy with them. I traded mine as a partial payment on a scope.
I was hoping for better.
Our experiences too, Rugers so called precision rifles are no more precision than any old off the shelf Ruger. It's just luck of the draw if you get one that's actually "precision". My brother bought a RPR and my regular bone stock RAR with wood stock would out shoot it with any ammo we tried. He traded it toward a Bergara
