Ruger 77 MK-II What should I do??

I picked up a Ruger 77 MK-II 7mm Mag today for $75 someone used 7MM Mauser ammo in it and trashed the barrel.

I was thinking of what to do with it--everyone has told me that it is tough to get a ruger to shoot really good.

Should I waste my time on it -- if so what do I rebarrel it to??

I have another tang style Ruger 7MM mag

264 Mag and 358 STA crossed my mind

Sounds like an impossible story, 7x57 mauser would rattle around in a 7 mag chamber, I have one, I dont see how the ammo could be fired, unless held upright with case resting on bolt face and fired, I think thats a pretty tall feat!! Take to reliable gun smith for a ck out, something does not sound right. sounds like a tall tale to me. OH yea ,if barrell is trashed for some reason, the rest of the gun may have a little value sell it make a couple bucks on parts.....

That was the story--?? It sounded a bit off to me too-
There is damage to the chamber however you can see it with a flashlight

The action seems OK--stock is OK

I think what really happened was reported incorrectly. It is very likely that 7x64 or 7x65R ammo was fired into that chamber.

It will fire but it will probably wreck the chamber or the rifle.

Rugers can be made to shoot very well with no more effort than any other factory rifle. The basic techniques may be different, but they are no more difficult or exotic that those used on any other conventional rifle.

As with any rifle, barrel quality is the single largest factor in the level of accuracy attainable. Have a quality barrel installed, bed the action properly, and develop suitable handloads.

I have a Ruger 77MKII with a Krieger barrel chambered in 6.5-284 Norma. I bedded it into a factory sporter laminated stock myself. It is shooting in the .4's with 140g and 123g AMAX's @ 100 yards in only the beginning stages of load development. Quite frankly, I am not sure that I can hold tight enough to shoot much better than that regardless of what else I do with load development.

One limitation of the Ruger 77MKII is magazine length. The Ruger magazine is just long enough to accommodate 30-06 rounds loaded to factory length. Any cartridge with a max OAL of 3.340" or shorter will work. This means that the 7mm RUM that was suggested will not work if the rifle is intended to be a repeater.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Ruger uses different followers for different groups of cartridges. Use of the proper follower is critical to making a Ruger feed using anything other than the cartridge that it was chambered for when it left the factory. If you need to change followers, Brownells is a good source.

If you are up for a wildcat cartridge, do a search for sinarms. The .338 SIN would be an excellent fit in your Ruger. It will reportedly outperform the .340 WBY in a 30-06 length case. If that is too much cartridge for you, a 6.5 SIN is under development.
