Ruger 77 as a target action ?

I built my first .308 F-TR rifle using a Ruger M77 action. It was an early model, which I think is better for F-TR than the current model because the original was a push feed action and I believe the recent ones are controlled feed. I found a magazine cut-off thing that allowed me to just put in a cartridge on top and close the bolt.

I replaced the original Douglass barrel with a nice 32inch Broughton. I had replaced the original trigger with a Timney and the stock had been replace by a Boyds some years back.

The biggest issue I had was with the scope mounts. My M77 had those scalloped rings that came with the rifle from Ruger. They're fine for the vast majority of shooters but a pain in the behind for 1000 yard zeros. I got hold of Picatinny adapters on top of which I installed the Burris Signature Zee rings with the plastic inserts. Measure the distance between the rings, apply some trigonometry and you figure out the inserts that are needed to get you to 1000 yards.

I still have the rifle; it's my backup when I go to big matches. The chambers are the same and the barrel lengths and twist are the same. it shoots just fine, but it was temporary until I built the rifle I wanted.

Randy Gregory of Accuracy Unliimted - Medford WI used the M77 action for NMC for many years, mostly 308 and then switched to 6.5x308. He was reasonably competitive at Perry in the 90's and has a ton of WI NMC titles.
