Roy Hunter bullets/ testing

Since I have started to mess with bore dimensions I have learned a little about bullets fitting the barrel. Every barrel you get will have slightly different dimensions and may fit different bullets better or worse. No matter how good a bullet is your barrel may not prefer it. Its one thing if you always use brand x barrel and learn its preferences. But brand y barrel may just prefer a different bullet. Or you get a fat or tight brand x and it no longer loves its usual thing. Most of us knew that you just had to try different bullets but now its making sense why. I have tweaked my barrels that I order to better suite this bullet. Thats just another way of doing it. But I do think with the really good bullets we have now you still need to test things and find out whats best for your barrel.

From year to year I have found that bullet detentions change. This is no reflection on the manufacturer but what they are given by the jacket manufacturer for that particular order. Some years they perform outstanding and others not so great. It’s a crap shoot for the buyer. What is expected is not necessary what they get year to year. For one to promote one in their current application is great, but their are others that might be outstanding in other applications. Their are so many variables to consider, I feel that all custom manufacturers are very close with one another. Before I drop a couple grand, are they really that superior.

They are by far the most consistent bullets I have ever measured. BTO, OAL and weight. With that being said, are they the only bullet I have on hand? Absolutely not. I have four barrels in service or that could be in service with a five minute barrel swap. Three do show a preference for the Hunters. The other has shot screamers with Vapor Trails. I have not given the Barts bullets I have on hand a good test yet.

The bottom line is by not having these in your inventory, you may depriving yourself of an incredible combination. Are they guaranteed to shoot great, no but none of them are. I know I plan on having them on hand though as long as he keeps making them.

Are you saying that in your opinion they are better than VT and Barts. Or in that particular testing session they shot well in your gun. Did you shoot the others in the same condition?

No, just as I stated, another great option to stock up on. All three of them, plus a couple other customs that aren't for sale, have won pretty much every match here this season. Each individual barrel will pick it's favorite as always.

So last night I screwed on a Hawk Hill barrel that shot well last year. It has 455 rounds on it and ate Roy’s s 106’s like candy on another rifle. I shot this powder test this morning at 1K. I like it because there are no unexplained shots and I really like the overlap on 30.2 and 30.3. Group testing will start at 30.26 gr. I have enough 106’s left to wear this barrel out.

Pretty good conditions. 70 degrees with a 3-5 mph wind from 11:00 to 5:00.

Then I shot another rifle to verify the load at 547 yards (longest available backstop) in preparation for a 600 yard match. This rifle has a Krieger on it. It likes Roy’s 103’s at 2,935 fps and has broken into the 1’s at 1K. They measure .9xx“ and 1.0xx”. For five quick shots in some wind, I was happy.

I can’t touch that....
You made my decision for me.

I haven't been sorting them, besides length, the last couple years. So since we have our championship this upcoming weekend, and since I hear Heather is coming to whoop on us..... I decided to check my 105 bullets i had boxed up for the match. Those of you with one of George's Bullet Genies will appreciate these 105 bullets.

Once again I think I wasted my night lol.

Must be Hybrids as in 105 Berger !!!

I posted this one in the competition forum but want to give Roy’s 103’s credit on this thread. This one was shot at IBS 600 Nationals a couple weeks ago. I heard rumors of a 1” 50 score with all X’s between relays. Little did I know it was mine. One of my favorite targets. 1.044”. Keep up the great work Roy!

My reamer for the br-improved has .140" free bore, and it works just fine with bullet a. Quite honestly I wish it had just a little more free bore for where I like things. I like just enough to hold the bullet lol.
I like your avatar, wonder where that came from. Matt

I have two reamers from and both are marked .115 FB. and one is .012 longer than the other. Both are from the same company, Your only guessing with what is written on them. Better get them on a comparator and see...... jim
My one buddy ordered a 300 WSM reamer exactly like mine. When it came we had to move the bullets out .090 to touch the lands. I bet it might wear the same name on it. Matt

Trying them in another new barrel BUT with a different reamer, AND with some alpha brass....figuring maybe I could derail the damn things, but looking like I'll need to work harder lol.

The barrel was green, still only at 111 rounds now, and the brass was virgin/new. Will tune this one up on lapua as well and see if they can hang with Roy's 6.5! (Just no one tell him he has a less than 0% chance) lol
