ROTATOR UPDATE

Well I had surgery at 0700 9/24 and had no pain for 5 hours. That is how long the nerve block lasted.
Almost fell asleep but my arm and shoulder have different ideas, they decided that there is no place that they are going to peaceful.
Rotator had a full tear on top and the bicep was torn up near my arm pit, both were fixed, I hope.
The sling is the most uncomfortable one I have ever worn, it is like it is too big and it slides around because these Velcro fasteners don't pull tight enough.
OK that is enough. It is late and I am just killing time while I have cool drink and a few drags of my cigar while everyone else sleeps.
Only a few more weeks of this and then 6-7 months of therapy. I'm too old for this shit.

LJmontaro is correct I also had 3 repairs done- 2 on R and 1 on L
They are not fun surgeries and good control of the pain is essential
Stay AHEAD of pain rather than waiting for it to return
Ask surgeon now about an ice water recirculation unit- it works wonders and you can sleep with it on
I used it for all 3 and my wife had extensive experience with it following numerous horse related injuries-

Good luck and remember that the rehabilitation following surgery is probably more important
8 years since last and hopefully final shoulder surgery and i keep up a routine of shoulder strengthening exercises
Fast approaching 80 but still able to lift and toss 45# hay bales although not as fast or as far as my misspent youth LOL

Again, good luck and best wishes

Surgeon humour ( I used to work at a medical school) - "Physiotherapy is a technique to keep the patient amused, while nature takes it's course"

Infectious disease humour - "Hep C isn't a problem, we know most of the patients - they lecture in Sociology at the main campus"

Admin humour - " This new anti - emetic for use during chemo is showing fantastic results" Manager - "How much is each dose?" " Around $75" Voice from the back " Does it work on nauseous managers?"

Good luck with the recovery.

Those ice water units are great. 3 frozen water bottles last for 3 hours. Bone on bone for several years. Full replacement coming in January.

I could be a wimp. I've had 2 rotator cuff surgeries and it took more than 6-7 months before I was confident I was completely healed.

No smoking. Interferes with tissue healing.

Good luck!! Find a good PT person and listen to them and do as they direct.

My shoulder had pain until almost 1 year exactly post surgery.

Had a complete re-construct of the Right shoulder , with a partial tear at the top of the rotator , about ten years ago , if memory serves . I never get sick , but have a Legion of very skilled surgeons on Speed Dial .
As was said , stay ahead of the pain control for a week or so . It is essential to your own well being . My surgeon gave me about 100 SOMA , ( Muscle Relaxer ) and thirty Oxycodone with four refills on the Oxy . Over the next four months , I used the re-fills . But it helped get through the Re-hab , and that was the objective .
Listen to your Re-hab people , but push it as hard as you can tolerate . The body has a amazing ability to heal itself when it is demanded to do so .
A heating pad , and ice packs will be extremely helpful once you start the re-hab .
Start with the Ice pack for ten minutes , and then ten minutes of moderate heat . Then back to the ice Pack for another ten , followed by ten to fifteen minutes of heating pad .
Muscle repair and strengthening will be enhanced , though it is a PITA to go through .

Ice and more ice. After a total of 5 rotator cuff surgeries, 4rt and 1 lf. I had the best outcome without therapy on the last two. My Doc. Would have surgery on Friday and start Therapy on Monday. Would never do Therapy again.
Best of luck. Did I mention Ice?

Hang in there, I am now 10 weeks post surgery. I had 3 complete tears that was completely torn off the shoulder. I agree with you, the sling was the most uncomfortable thing to have to sleep with.

As many know, my wife had a complete shoulder replacement, and 6 weeks into recovery she fell and busted the entire repair.
They started all over, only had to do a reversal, with the ball in the shoulder and the cup on the bone.

She is now 9 weeks past the second surgery and is doing great. She has two more rehab sessions.

Pain management is paramount. She figures she has about 4 more months before her shoulder feels kinda normal.

Hang in there. And just don’t fall.

Best wishes
I am year and a half past left shoulder Rotator Cuff repair. Slept in chair . Still have left bicep muscle torn.

Guys are correct. Plenty of ice.
Ice in Jack Daniel's

To all a great day.

Froggy, Too Old for this?? :D
Haha, Sit tight, Brother!
Were growing into more and more of
this crap. Gettin old aint for (Pus)kittys

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Buddy

Best of luck with your recovery Froggy! Just yesterday I had my first issue shooting from the bench. Both of my shoulders are bad but the right is much worse than the left. The first time I touched off my Ruger 1A in .270 I had an OUCH moment, I dug a slip on Limbsaver pad out of my range box and that helped a lot.

I've had both shoulders worked on to repair supraspinatus muscle tears and partial bicepts pull aways from the bone. They gave me a cold water machine first time. Put 16 oz frozen water bottles in it and fill with water, seal the top and plug it in. It circulates very cold water to a cuff that fits around your shoulder. Very effective.

How is everything going? I am 11 weeks now today, just did PT again and they did measurements today. I was able to move my right arm above my head straight up both directions. Hang in there, do the stretches they ask for. I found out laying flat on my back and using my other arm to raise the injured arm above your head helps so much with muscle stretching.
