What’s your method for changing a chrome barrel without damaging it in the barrel vise?

A toilet paper roll or drywall tape (the paper type, not the self adhesive type) typically do the job. YMMV

I use binder paper, also works well.
If its stubborn I use Copper pipe to grab
If the copper embeds into the barrel it can usually be taken off with steel wool
Some use lead to clamp around the barrel and I've heard it works best
I've never needed Lead

I just wrap two layers of note pad paper around my barrels. The key is to get the vice tight enough so the barrel can not turn in it.

Rosin on a piece of leather work too. The drywall tape works well. Like Jackie said, lock it down right and tight the first time so it can’t spin.

I saved the paper tube that comes with aluminum foil. Dang near
the perfect size.

I have used a business card and a "death grip" on the barrel. Leaves no marks. Good luck and keep us posted.

I use thin sheets of lead from a hobby shop

I cut up a new leather welding glove and tried it. Leather got stuck to the barrel real pain to get off. Used tp roll this morning worked good many thanks to all.
