Stephen. I change barrels frequently. I now have 10 SR score rifles in 9 different calibers. I use a Viper barrel vice with a PMA stainless steel rear entry tool. I don't have to put any crap between the vice in the barrel because of the coating on the vice. It doesn't leave any marks on the barrel at all. I leave my scopes mounted to the action when changing barrels also. I have yet to have an issue doing it this way. I have talked to a half dozen SR gunsmiths that I have had dealings with and the general consensus is that if you want to use a torque wrench, torque it to about 70-75 foot pounds. I personally never use a torque wrench to tighten barrels. I coat the threads very lightly with copper based Loctite, screw it on by hand until it is snug, stick it in the vice and put even pressure on the handle of the wrench and I know by feel when I've applied enough pressure to it. It's not rocket science. The barrels always come off the same way. I give it a quick snap and they always have come loose. I've never had to Gorilla it because it was really tight.Shooters
Like to hear from anyone who has changed barrels lately using the techniques myself and others have presented. Remember keep the vise extra tight and forget the cylinder head torque wrench. Trust your hands on this one. Read my Thread and the Posts from others. Gettur Dun.
