Rock Chuck Infestation

Rick in Oregon

Our local rock chuck population appears to be getting a bit on the much-side. One of the local schools is infested, as the chucks have learned that the nice green grass is a dinner bell when compared to the natural vegetation just on "their" side of the fence.

Here's the headline today:

Of course, the city is doing "a study" to see what the best means of dealing with or removing the critters. We all know the cure, but as it's within the city limits, no firearms of course. But my Beeman R10 .20 cal would be the ticket but I'm certain their consensus will be some sort of live-trapping.

Too bad it's in city limits....as my 20VT works right well on Rocky and his pals :):

At least it's a good sign to see the local critters doing so well. I need to get out and visit their 'country cousins'. ;)

I have a family member that has more rock chucks around their house than any place I've seen in the last 40 years, but of course it's a no shooting zone and the no shooting zones here mean not even a BB gun or bow and arrow. I'm at their house at least once a week and I sooooooooooo badly what to sneak my suppressed 17 WSM out on their deck and thin them out.

A cut in half apple with honey on it inside a Havahart trap will keep someone busy. I trapped and shot them on a golf course, by the thousands, I used to run. I had to dig a mass grave to keep the smell down, it was fun.

I digress, but.....

My mom once trapped a NE Indiana “ Soybeanus Digestus “ w/ one of those Havahart type traps. I lived right next door, and Mother Bear asked me to come over to take care of the critter.

I had never previously had occasion to let any animal out of one of these style devices, but that did not prevent me from going over to take care of the situation.

Upon seeing me approach, the rather enraged animal moved faster than Bruce Lee..... and much to my consternation.... was out from the inside of the trap ; and was closing on me @ a surprising rate.

The situation soon had my complete & full attention. It occurred to me that I was about to learn the true meaning of “ incisors “.

I don’t remember the draw, but did manage to count my expended .357Mag rounds as I DA’ d his a$$. Much to my chagrin & disgust...
he made it back to his hole under the barn foundation. Fortunately, all that was hurt was my tinitus.

Havahart traps ?? YRMY.

Craw offs don't count..

When “I read local school is infested “
I just had to share this post with you.
WVHitman is a groundhog hunting diehard!!!!

Ha! Great story, thanks for sharing.

The school 'leaders' (read: libtards) here will not even allow airguns for this purpose, so WVHitman is very fortunate that he's allowed to use his 'quiet pistol' in town. Nice.

Another great story, one that some would not have told; good for you for your candor. I can sure relate; similar to an encounter with a wounded badger a few years ago. Not sure I can move that fast now though!

Badger: 1
Me: 0
Tinitus after the encounter? Oh yes.

How much noise does a bow or crossbow make? Mine are really quiet!! And very lethal!!
Food for thought.

JDM
