RL23 in 22 Creed or 22-250AI ???

I ran RL22 for a year and ran VV165 for a year both with 90-95gr bullets. You should be fine with RL23 if that is what you wish to try. I burned a barrel out at about 1000-1100 rounds with RL22. Switching to VV165 I am at 1450 rounds and think I could get into the 2000 area with ease.

I’ve been running H4450 in both of these cases. I’ve gotten along just fine with it but seems like RL23 might be just about perfect. I loaded some up with 75 Amax for the Ackley. I’ll see how it goes. Thanks

I've used RL-26 in the .22-.250 AI with 75 grain and heavier bullets and I'm pretty happy with the results. RL-23 is next - less temperature sensitivity will be a good thing.

Per QL, RL26 shows to give quite a bit higher velocities over RL23. In fact RL26, with the heavier bullets, shows to be the top performing powder with regard to velocity. Another powder that I'd look at over RL23 is RL16. I'm using RL16 in my 20-250 with the 55gr Bergers and it's working very well.

Any guidance as to a starting load with RL-16? I've got a couple of pounds of it in the powder closet.

Depending on your OAL and your particular gun, with a 75gr Berger, it shows 38gr as being close to max so a few grains less than 38 and work up from there.

Many thanks! With a little luck I should get time for a work-up this week.

My 22 Creedmoor likes H-4350 with 80 gr. Hornady's but, always willing to try a new powder. Let us know how it goes.

I was kinda hoping to get above the 3450fps mark with 75 Amax and the RL23. H4350 works at 34-3450 and does it quite accurately. I’m not yet sold on the RL26 stability in the smaller capacity cases just yet but the speed is undeniable.

I worked up to 43.4 grains of RL-26 in the .22-.250 AI, using fire formed Lapua brass, the Hornady 75 gr. ELD-M and CCI 250s. I stopped there, short of pressure signs of any sort, because the accuracy and velocity were more than satisfactory. Average velocity out of a 26" 1:8 twist barrel was 3,489 with very stable shot string statistics and 5 shot groups were running .5" - .7" consistently at 200.

I have shot this load in warmer (~90 degrees F) and cooler conditions (~70 degrees F) with consistent results on paper and no observed differences in bolt lift, extraction, primer condition and case head expansion. I don't know where the ceiling is in my rifles - this load is short of whatever that might be.

Edited to add: I load similarly for another .22-.250 AI, with Winchester brass being the only component difference. My particular lot of Win brass delivers the same average velocity with .2 more grains of RL-26. Accuracy is not quite as good as with the Lapua, but I chalk that up to brass consistency. I may be wrong, but it shoots well enough for pests at longer ranges . . .

26” barrel. I’m pretty sure it was over 3400 FPS.
I have a 30" barrel so 3550 is common with a few powders for me. Not looking to get super hot loads but accuracy is important shooting coyotes and ghogs at very long ranges. I'll be playing with the RL23&26 again soon.

Yes exactly, Accuracy is high priority. The 41.0 +/- load of RL 23 using a 80 gr amax was going approximately 3450 FPS in my 26” 7.5 twist Criterion but that is where I found the best accuracy. It will shoot faster without noticeable pressure signs but I noticed deteriorating accuracy so I abandoned efforts of increasing the charge.

Well with the good numbers that the 75 ELD produces that extra 50 to 75 or even a hundred feet a second won't make much of a difference. The extra hundred feet a second I'm getting off that 30 inch Barrel is just free velocity.
