RL17 vs. H4831 SC in .260 or .260AI

Has anyone done a real velocity comparison or RL17 vs. H4831SC back to back with their .260AI or .260 Rem. w/ 139- 140 gr. projectiles?

I have seen other tests with .284's,etc. the RL17 seemed to give a vel. increase. Just wondering if anyone has done it in the caliber that I shoot?

There are a few people using H4831 SC to pretty good use. I believe its in the 38-40 grain region with 139 grain bullets in the .260.

I personally am getting great results with VV

I've been shooting a standard .260 Rem since 2002. With 140 Berger VLD's and H4831sc, I get 2820 fps with a low ES, the primer pockets are good for about 5 or 6 loads.

Earlier this spring I did some load development using Reloader 17. The weather here is still cool, so everything that I've done still has to be rechecked when it warms up. At 65 degrees I was getting 2860 fps with a low ES using Reloader 17 and Berger 140 VLD's

Both shot very well with low extreme spread in velocity. Using H4832sc is a compressed charge, with Re. 17 you still have some room in the case.

Great info. How was the accuracy? I shoot a 260AI w/ 48.2gr. H4831SC in a 26' tube with the 139gr. Lapua naked tips. Ex. accuracy at 2920 FPS. I'd take any velocity I can get and still keep the bug hole groups. Thanks for the post. It helps!

What brass do you use? I have been sorting Rem brass. I have 300 Lapua 308 that i have necked down to .264, fireformed, etc. Still haven't got an accurate load as the Lapua brass seems to be thicker and holds less powder. My 1st try was major blown primers, velocity us to 2980fps,etc. Bad pressure signs and I was in the 47ish grain region. Since the Rem did so good, I stayed with this for this F class season this year. Next year when my new bbl arrives, I'd like to use the Lapua brass that I speant so much time on getting ready.

Before Reloader 17 came along, I found that I could get more velocity using Rem. brass and H4831sc. Using Lapua brass I had pressure problems. The Price of Rem. brass is far below that of Lapua, so if I only get 5or 6 loading from the Remy, so what. And the accuracy is less than .250 @ 100 yds.

The Reloader 17 load that I worked up this spring was with Lapua brass, this load was a little faster than the load using Rem. brass and H4831sc. What I have yet to try is developing a load using Rem. brass and Reloader 17.

I've reached 2875fps with 139 Lapuas in a 30 in tube. Powder was 42 gr. H-4350sc.If you can reach 75 fps more with the Re-17 you could convert your 260 Rem into a 6.5-284 with almost double the barrel life. I'm curious as to what the testing results will show with Re-17.

I have had good luck with RE17 using the 130 Bergers. I use right at 47 grains and get about 3050fps with it. for the 140 Bergers, I use the H 4831sc and shoot 47 grains as well, hitting 2920fps for a average. Ron Tilley

FWIW, i've come up with a bug hole load for my 6.5x08 with 140 vld - 41.6 of RL - 17, vel - 2954 fps, ES - 2.5, AD - 1.5
29' truefight, [bumped once]

will work thihs load in my 'new' 6.5 HABU [6.5x08 with a 30 deg. shoulder].

I just worked up a good load for the 6.5-284 using RL-17 and 140 grain Berger VLD moly bullets. You can read the results on my web site here.

Bugholes at 3066 FPS. Very nice powder for this cartridge. I will be trying it in my 260AI as soon as I can.
