Anyone tried shooting 69g+ bullets over 10X in a 223? All data i have found is for 55g and under, so i do know it is going to be a bit fast of a powder. I just have 20lbs of 10X and a new 1-9twist 223 and thinking about trying it out.

Otherise what are the powders of choice? Varget, RL15, N540 are all contenders I may have to go try out.

I was going to PM you, but I see you don't do PM's. Any chance you would give me a start charge?

I have heard of some guys running RL17 as well, but no data out there that I can find. I have 10lbs of it that I picked up for a nother gun that it just never really liked so I may experiment with that too.

JJ,

all three of the other powders you mentioned are top choices for heavy bullet 223 loads. For HP-XC shooters, it's about an even split between Varget and RL-15, but these two dominate this type of shooting. The N540 is an excellent choice as well, but doesn't see quite as broad use as the other two. The 69s are actually more of a middle weight range bullet these days, and wil work well with some slightly faster powders. WW-748 has always been a popular choice for the 69s, and one that generally gets the job done quite nicely. Pretty flexible combination, and it's hard to go too far wrong. That 1x9" is going to limit you to bullets about the length of the 69s, though. Don't bother with the 77s, 80s or 82s. They just won't stabilze in a twist this slow.

I've used the 75 gr AMAX in front of a hot load of RE-15 with a 1:9 twist, and they shot well to 900 yards, the farthest I had a chance to shoot them.
But you still have a light bullet that is very wind sensitive after all is said and done.

Thanks guys. I figured the heaviest i might try would be 75-77g an even those are a stretch. Mostly, I have a ton of 10x and 17, so if I can find some uses it saves me from another powder on the bench. I have been trying to consolidate a little here. I spend more time on research and base development, but it seems I am getting pretty good results, just takes longer.

It sounds like I better just break down and order a keg of RL15. The 10X will be experimentation time to see if I want to keep the barrel or if I want to scrap it for a 1-8 custom.
