RL-7 in 6br

Hello everyone, I am wanting to try RL-7 powder with both the 68gr. Berger, and the 75gr. v-max. Can anyone give me any guidance?
Thanks in advance,

Tony.

Thanks Ron, I have tried Varget, and had pretty good luck, just wanting to try a few different powders that I have on the bench.

RL-12 or RL-15 are likely better choices, as would N135 or N140. I tried H322 and it is slower than RL-7, and it really was not ideal. See this burn rate chart.

They haven't made RE12 for years,
26gr of RE7 will get you apx 3150 from a 26" barrel using a 75 set to 2.24 OAL.
That is a 55000 psi load, as always start a little lower.

Hahah,,,I was gona reccomend Rx-11 ....I still hav aprox. 4lb. of it made in the early 50's!!...used to work great in 22-250 ....I bet Rx-7 would work good in a 30 BR???!!,,,Roger

Tony,

I haven't tried it with that weight, but did give it a go with the 58gn V-Max last year. MVs were fine, but groups were on the large side.

If you want to try a faster burner, I'd recommend Accurate Arms AA-2015. It worked very well with 55-75gn weight bullets for me (27.0-29.5gn with the 75gn V-Max, 3,277 fps max load and no pressure signs, but in a long-throated chamber designed for 105s so a lot of bullet jump.)

Other powders I've tried with 70-75s include Re10x (OK but not outstanding 28.5-30gn, V-Max); 28.0-30.5gn IMR-3031 (so-so group sizes 3,246 fps for top load, V-Max); 30.4-32.4gn H. Varget (larger groups than the faster burners 3,241 fps and primers cratering top load, 75 V-Max); 28.5-30.0gn Viht N133 (OK but not outstanding groups, 3,246 fps top load V-Max)

My barrel preferred the 70gn Nosler Ballistic Tip to the 75 V-Max. 29.0-31.0gn H. Benchmark and 28.5-30.5gn Viht N530 gave very good results, especially Benchmark with five by 5-round groups across the powder weight range running at 0.35-0.45" throughout in a well worn 28" barrel. Top load gave 3,374 fps. N530 groups ran from 0.35 to 0.75" with the top load at 3,252 fps. MV spreads were smaller with N530 than many though.

As noted, this was in a well-used (4,000 rounds) Border 1-8" barrel throated long for 105s and with a fair amount of erosion on top. This will reduce pressures, so the usual warnings about loads data apply but even more with short-throated varmint rifle barrels. None of these loads was anywhere near too hot in my set up, but top loads and MVs rarely gave the smallest groups anyway.

rl-15 or vv150 in my br it shots great out to 600 yards...varget is ok but I've found these two powders work well in most bullet weights.

Tony What barrel length and twist???
I have shot alot of powders but never RL-7.. I think if you are running a fast twist it would be no good. I have shot good groups with,H322,H335,H4895,H380,N-133,N-135,AA2015,IMR 8208, varget, AA2460..and maybe some more i cant think of. the only powder that my BR did not like is ramshot tac..my nosler reloading man, shows RL-7 with a 70gr NBT start load at 23.5 and max load at 27.5.. I have been shooting RL-10x in my 6BR . 14 twist..and so far it has been the most consistent of all the powders in the 14 twist with 65 and 66 gr bullets. a shilen 14 twist,.262NK 26", a pac-nor 14 twist .269 nk 24", a bronx .272nk 26". have all shot 30.5gr of RL-10 into the smallest groups to date. All barrels were 14 twist and were shooting 66gr fowlers and 65gr v-max..I think i could shoot a berger 68gr as well but have not tryed to yet, (with RL-10).. now the 66gr berger high BC Dont seem to shoot good for us but maybe the 69gr would. Its fun to try different stuff and see what work good and what works great.Thats because everything works good in the BR. Thats funny me and a buddy was just sitting around the other night ribbing some 22-250 guys,We were saying-yea what do you have- ah dosent really matter what ever powder and bullet you have just jam it into the 6BR and their in the same hole,Yea just use what ever you have does'ent really matter.
