Rimfire reamers - best ones ?

I just started researching Rimfire reamers.

PTG has a list of them bigger than their list of 308 reamers ...

If you know a good reference on them I should read, or can just recommend one please do.
Thanks.

What are you using it in? Semiauto, bolt. Benchrest, small game, etc... depends on if you want to engrave the bullet in the rifling and if your extractor will be able to extract an unfired round. I ended up with 4 different reamers to use depending on the above and what ammo is to be used.

Well that didn’t take long... (research wise)...

I think I’ll see what my Sako Quad chamber spec’s are, and then measure my fav. Field ammo to see how tight things are in those... I may check a few semi auto’s to see how sloppy those are.

I had just ran across Benz chambers, I hadn’t heard of those for years.. thanks for brining that back up.

What was really interesting is that I found out that a lot of 22 ammo varies wildly in terms of how the bullet pressure bands present into the rifle lands... I haven’t shot 22 for decades - but at one point I did by a die set for modifying the front end of the lead 22 into a hollow point or other configuration (bullet swagging dies). I’ll have to dig those up, I now get why they are effective.

The guy that built the 22 Olympic Rifles had a trash can full of Rim fire barrels off of 40x's. I about had a stroke when I saw them and asked if I could have them, he grinned and said yes. I asked him on a lark how would one of them shoot on a Ruger 10-22. I could see the light bulb come on in his head. So, he cut off the chamber of one of the 40x barrels and put it on a Ruger 10-22. I did a trigger job and put the barreled action in a custom heavier sporter stock, bedded the action.

He modified the throat where it would barely engrave a cci green tag bullet. I put a leupold 36x on the rifle, and at 80 yards, all bullets opened up a single bullet hole...he was amazed to say the least.

I took him on a hunt shooting ground squirrels. Since we were both shooting sub sonic ammo, we killed a ton of squirrels, head and shoulder shots, but I changed the scope out to a Leupold 6.5x20 AO with target knobs. We marked the target knobs for 150 yards and killed some a little further.

He talked about throat dia and engraving the bullets, but it has been so long, I can not remember the details.

Coming from a man who had more than one rifle finish in the top 10 at the ARA nationals, the JGS Match is a great all around reamer. Depending on the ammo one wants to use you can ream a chamber with this reamer to shoot whichever brand you like. This is my go too reamer. I have a couple actually.. standard JGS Match has a 2 degree lead and that is perfectly fine for both brands of top ammo. I also have the same reamer but with a 1 degree lead. i use this one when a customer is sure Lapua is his choice. I cant tell a dam bit of difference in how they each preform. Chambered correctly they both flat ass shoot! The JGS Match is a solid choice i can promise you!

Anschutz reamer modified to 1.5 degree and set to engage Lapua centerX just the way I like. Would not be useable in semi autos and some bolt guns. Using it on a RimX with very good results and am presently working on rechambering a Marlin 39A

" presently working on rechambering a Marlin 39A"

Please give us a report on that project when it is completed and tested.

Skeetlee - thanks..

I have custom reamers made from most of my work on centerfire, I have a couple JGS reamers, I’ll need to get thier prints and start making some ammo measurements.. Engraving is new concept, but throating is not - I typically order a min throat on all my reamers and then use a uni-throater to custom set the throat to meet the customers needs.

I’ll get the JGS match print... thanks!

Linebaugh - I have a T series 39A myself that I may have shoot the snot out off and could use a new barrel.... so yes please post updates on your project.
