Rimfire match camber info.

Had a rifle built a year or so ago. It was built for friendly br matches with the hope to be able to be competitive in some bigger sanction matches. Although the gun shoots pretty good just always seem like it was lacking somewhere. So had another gun smith evaluate it. And one of his big gripes about it was the chamber. It does not engrave the bullet at all. He told me a engrave chamber would make a difference. Which I have always heard for others to. Thought I was getting a full engrave chamber when it was built.. Just curious how much most br rifle chambers are set up to engrave the bullet. I am sure each gunsmith likes something different. Just looking to see what most people use and what works for them. Well I was pretty tough on you and it was for a reason. BR sanctioned shooting is a specialized sport and for the most part there are things that work and things that don't work and it is best to find these things out before the fact rather than after. Now if you have asked all the right questions and received bad advice here on the forums then I owe you a huge apology. And yes I think you will find that all good BR chambers will engrave the bullet. Maybe you and your smith didn't communicate on the same page or maybe he wasn't the smith for the job.
 
Go over to RA and do a search for engraving or stickout. You will find more info than you care to read.

Or as John said, find a reputable rimfire smith and discuss with them. They should know and be able to explain it to you. If they don’t want to, find a different one.
 
Most engrave , if using ELEY as an example, to about the 2nd drive band.
There have been some fine guns with very little engraving, though not particularly popular.
It may very likely be the guy simply cut a shit chamber Or fit a sub par barrel, not real easy to attribute all to the chamber.

Thanks that’s where I am at now. I am dealing with a different gunsmith to get it straightened out. The first one I used was recommended by a lot of people. And honestly I thought I was getting a engraved chamber. I will say you don’t see any of his guns shooting ara but you do in some other sanctioned match’s. Anyway was just curious how much engraving some gunsmiths use compared to others. That’s all

That’s good, some of these guy can pile it on pretty heavy.;)

So, when you say no engraving, does this mean when you load a round, it goes in all the way to the rim, or does it still have some stick out? Will your bolt extract a loaded round? May be the lead angle is shallow, like 1 or 1.5 degrees, versus say a 2 or 2.5.

I have two rifles that barely show any engraving, they shoot just fine, others that have more and will not extract a seated round, they shoot just as well. My just fine, may not be good enough for others.

Rifles get reworked and or sold off all the time, some had problems and sometimes not. Lot of things affect 22lr, I would look the complete package over, bedding, ignition, the rest, tuner and the shooter. Let a well seasoned shooter give it a try with some known good ammo and a good rest setup.

Yes I can push it in to the rim. And extract a round.

When you push a live round, can it go in all the way with no resistance? as anyone knows I use the Nevius chamber specs. on all my aftermarket barrels. it is setup to give just 0.030 engraving, everyone except for a slightly tighter bore barrel I couldn't see any engraving, but they all had about a 0.075 stick out of a live round before I can feel resistance as I push a round into the chamber.

I found the more engraving the pickier a barrel can be on lot selection. Kevin Nevius has a 3+ yearlong thread on what he found testing different engraving lengths and chamber leade angles. you can find it on RA. look for testing chambers for Lapua. since going to this chamber spec. I have had better results finding shootable lots.

Well, here is what you can do if you feel that the chamber is holding it back. Have your new Smith, pull the barrel and set it back just enough to get the stick out close to where you want it. I would go with .070-.090 Remember to clean the wax off the bullet. Then cut the shoulder to match. You may have to change to a cone breech if you have extractor slots, if you already have a cone, it will just need dressed up.
