rifle stocks

I am looking to buy/build a rifle stock for a long action Remington. I have and A5 and A3 Mc Millan on 2 rifles and I like them a lot. However, I am looking for some thing that is less size and weight that may lend it self to being carried without loosing the vertical pistol grip and the ability to help absorb recoil. Is there such a thing? I have no idea what to ask for. A not quite tactical stock, an almost tactical stock. With varmint rifles they have a walking varminter. Maybe i am looking for a walking tactical stock??? Some thing for an old man that can still get to the mailbox, but is in less than force recon marine shape. Now that Ive seen that in print way less than FRM shape. Can one of you guys steer me in the right direction. Head spaced the barrel last week, put the trigger together and added safety and bolt release to it today. Time for stock

What barrel contour are you using?

I'm an old man too. :(

I have a few "stalking" varmint rifles, namely two Rem Model 7's, 223 Rems with 20" barrels, excellent for a "walking" around varmint applications.

I replaced the junk Remington plastic stocks with Bell and Carlson Medalists stocks which have aluminum bedding blocks and are free floated. These stocks significantly improved group size. Although not needed for a 223 Rem, they have a generous recoil pad.

However, they have traditional pistol grips. I would prefer a more vertical grip for better trigger finger positioning, but these stocks work well enough. The incremental weight of these stocks is a good tradeoff for me since I obtained better groups (precision) with these B&C stocks.

Grayboe Terrain might work also, they have one for the Rem varmint profile.
I like Grayboe’s Renegade better, but not sure it’s much lighter than the M5 it’s patterned after.

The McMillan Game Warden looks very much like a standard stock but has a vertical grip. The Game Warden also has a slightly wider forearm to accept larger barrel contours. They aren’t near the size and weight of an A3 or A5 but still have the tactical feel.

Boyd's gunstocfks has a Pro Varmint with a fairly vertical grip for both standard barrels and varmint barrels, walnut, painted hardwood or laminated. Pretty reasonable and you can cut off as much wood where and as much as you want.

Edd it's wearing a heavy sporter right now but I have a way bigger Bartlein in the safe. Multi??? Brett I looked at them and I like them a lot but I don't think I am willing to get that spendy in this political climate. I have some woodworking skills I may copy it if I don't find any thing I think fits the style any better. Josh I love that stock but I want light weight, i am not sure but that may weigh more than my Mc Millan's. thanks for all the replies, keep um comin.

I’m not sure what size a heavy sporter or a way bigger Bartlein is but, to suit my taste, I would want a McMillan Game Scout for a Krieger #3 or smaller. For a contour larger than that, I would want a McMillan Game Warden.

In the past, I’ve made my versions on the heavier side. They’re just a design take off of the discontinued Tikka Master Sporter stock. They can be made smaller and lighter if so desired. I hope to find time this summer to make some lighter versions for some barreled actions I have. My memory is a little foggy on the weight of an original but I think it was under 3 pounds. I made a direct copy for Dusty, a few years ago. Maybe he weighed it and can chime in.

For the sake of cost I would go with the Boyd’s pro varmint. A good budget stock and not to heavy. Made in the A3, A5 style. With pillars added it’s about half the cost of the McMillan.

Blackhawk Axiom adjustable lop, cheek rest. Recoil reduction system. Have had one on my main coyote rifle for years, zero poi change. Below zero and room temp no change. Rides in a mid range hard case in pickup bed all winter, no issues.

These stocks that Edd is suggesting would be my pick for the newest and best designed stock for hunting. I just have the McMillan Mc3 version of it in a long action and it is a great fit for me.https://mc3stocks.com/product/tradition-standard-short-action-bdl/
