Rifle Set-Up

This is my first rifle set-up. Let me know what you guys think.

Rifle- Remington 700 SPS Stainless .308 24"

Rifle Bipod- Harris 9-13" Series 1

Scope- Leupold VXII, 4-12X40, Fine Duplex, AO, (Silver)

Scope Base- Two-piece Leupold base (Silver)

Scope Rings- Leupold Rings STD 1'' Medium (Silver)

Scope Cover- Butler Creek Flip Open Eye #11

Firstly, I am going to be using this rifle mostly for target shooting maybe even competition. When I do go hunting, I will be going after medium-large sized deer and wild boar.

Do you think it will affect me if I'm using stainless on Deer? Do I need more camo?

Is the .308 too much kick for what I want to do?

If not, do you recommend 7mm-08, .308 or 30-06?

Also, if you have any other opinions or questions please dont hesitate. The more info I get the better. Cheers ...

A .308 Win. will kill any deer on this planet but if you run into Hogzilla, you may want to think twice.

The scope that you mention will work in a pinch, but in low light, fine cross hairs can be nearly impossible to see.

Stainless steel isn't a problem for hunting and is quite a benifit in damp climate.

Izy2190,
First of all I don't believe in bad mouthing people's equipment or looking down on a person or his equipment as it may be all he can afford which in that case it is the best rifle in the world to that person @ the time, but you ask so here go's.
I think you have a pretty good deer rifle,as mentioned in previous post you may have problems in low light with the fine cross hairs. With a trigger job, a good bedding job and some time spent on working up a load you might have a excellent hunting rifle and a decent target rifle.
As far as a compitition rifle... I don't see it with the setup you have,to be competitive in todays world you would need different rings and base, higher power scope, throw everything away but your action, have it blue printed -new stock- new barrel-new trigger, just to start with. I suguest keeping this rifle for hunting and having fun on the weekends with your friends or whatever :) And build yourself a compitition rifle,If that isn't in the budget maybe a savage model 12 or a 40x rem.
And who know's it might shoot excellent and you might be able to compete in light gun or somthing, now I have only shot long range BR so I dont know there might be some compitition out there for factory hunting rifles.I had fun for years with rifles just like yours shooting on the weekends competing with my friends, and somtimes I wish I would have stayed there ??? Enough said, have fun with what you have, be safe and WELCOME TO THE FORUM.

Thanks heaps guys

I own a Leupold VXII, 4-12X40, Fine Duplex, AO, (Silver)

Do you think a Butler Creek Flip Open Eye #11 will fit perfectly? Would I really need a front cover also? Is the rear enough?

What do you guys recommend for Ear Protection? What's worked well for you guys at a affordable price?

Izy2190,
I don't know about the scope covers I just tell the guy behind the counter what I want and he give's them to me. If I use scope caps I usually buy both ends. I ruined my hearing shooting with no hearing protection. It never bothered me so I didn't bother with hearing protection :( Now when I am around other people shooting I use the new noise supression ear muffs, when I am shooting I use the normal foam ear plugs,if I am around a gun with a muzzle brake especially a clam shell brake I use both. Let me put it this way if it hurts your ears or your ears are ringing, or if your getting headaces or fealing nauses when around people shooting you don't have enough protection.

Izy2190 I have a Remington 700 SPS varmint in 308 that I love. 308 is a great round to plink with and hunt with as well.

tnhunter,
I have had others ask about the remington sps. How well does yours shoot and what are you shooting in it? and what are you using it for?

Sounds like you have a good-looking setup there...don't worry about camo, people have been hunting for hundreds of years without it. Hope you bag one this season. BJ

Thanks guys for your honesty and good manners.

Some people tell me the 7mm-08 is better then the .308 and the 30-06. That it is incredibly accurate on a flat trajectory.

What other advantages does it have? Any disadvantages?

Sorry guys, the more I ask the more I learn.

There are some Browning ones that are not too expensive and fold up nice and compact. I like mine. The trick is to get ones that are flat enough not to contact your stock. Some standard industrial ones I have do not work -- too big.

I first bought the rifle for the action. Paid 515 dollars out the door for it new. I decided to shoot it before I done any work to it and glad I did. Even with the factory stock it shoot 1 moa shooting 165 hornady sst over 42 gr varget. I changed the stock to a richard microfit stock last summer to shoot some long range. The groups shrank to a 1/2 moa. The gun shot really good out to 700 YDS but 800 started to fall apart a bit. A few months back I once again changed the stock out to a HS precision stock so I could have more of a tactical rifle to hunt with. I bought a 243 vls around feb last year and kind of regret getting the vls. I wish I would have bought a sps and just replaced the stock out with a HS precision.
