Rifle Case for Competition Rifle

Can't find the thread from last year. I have a competition rifle that is 51.5" with my Sightron SIII scope on top. Needing a way to protect it going to matches and the range.

What are you using for cases for such long rifles? I have looked locally and all I can find is 48" cases

The Bald Eagle soft cases Grizzly sells will take long rifles. My favorite case is an AIM Field Sports (UK) drag bag. Expensive but it is the longest I've seen and has nice side pockets, a slo for a cleaning rod and straps inside to hold the gun.

I think they were written up in the Daily Bulletin some time ago.

If you want a hard case, Pelican makes one with over 50 inches inside:

The Pelican 1750 isnt long enough.

INSIDE: 50-1/2" x 13-7/16" x 5-1/4" (128.3cm x 34.1cm x 13.3cm)

Although there are probably better options I use this in the 53 inch version:

I have the rubber crown cap that came on the barrel. guess it would be smart to keep that on when it is in the case travelling to the matches. I drive to the matches

This is a great case. I picked it up at Camp Perry last year...It's light, protective, and has carry straps for lugging it between the yardage lines...It's padded very, very well inside with thick layers of foam on both sides, top and bottom. I don't hesitate throwing it into back of truck. It will take a 52" gun easily.

I use a Hafner soft case. They are double thick and you can order them to any custom length. Not cheap, but very well made here in the USA.

Bullets.com carries the Bald Eagle case for $69 - a deal. What I like about them is that not only will they accommodate a 53-54" rifle, they are 13" tall. More than enough for high mounted scopes, tall irons, etc.. Have had one for a couple seasons now and it holds up just fine. Wish there were more colors but can not beat the price vs. quality.

There is the Plano Gun Guard All Weather case. Its 52inches inside length. You can get it for about 100 dollars. I think if you a hard case any bigger your talking about a lot of money.

On sale for $59.95.

It is heavily padded and used by a lot of match shooters.

With all due respect for those talking about a "soft" case, ain't no way in hell I'd be putting a competition quality rifle ($4000+ without a scope like a Sightron) in anything but a Pelican quality case. Cabela's sells what appears to be Pelican quality that is sometimes on sale. Bite the bullet and buy something that REALLY protects a fine piece of weaponry. Just my .02 worth.

While I understand what you are saying, try lugging that 60lb + cases up and down the yardage lines..300 to 600 yards. Along with all your other gear, you'd be glad to have a case like I posted link too. I also wasn't kidding when I said that I'm not afraid to throw my $5000 plus rifle into the back of the truck with this case. Obviously, u got to use a little sense, and not play football with it. I've got several hard cases, pelican, starlight...but they are only collecting dust. If I was sending my rifle somewhere without my personally taking it, then it'll go in the Pelican..

+1 on what Jim says. I use the drag-bag at the range but I use a Pelican when the rifle is in checked baggage or travel long distances in the car. The full sized hard cases can result in an over-size and/or overweight charge with some airlines so I have gone to one of the 40 inch Pelicans and I break the rifle down so it fits. I saw a rifle checked in one of the long hard cases come off the baggage cart broken in half. Fortunately the owner was able to make some quick adjustments and still shoot but it made me change how I do things. The Bald Eagle cases are really nice when I travel by plane because they fold up easily and fits in my luggage.
