Rifle barrels rebore

I heard that once a barrel is shot out there is a company out there that can rebore your barrel to a larger caliber? Is this worth doing?

Most barrels that are "out shot" have plenty of rifling left. It is usually throat erosion and sometimes the crown. cut 1/4" off each end of the barrel and get it chambered deeper and recrowned. However for the price, buy a pre-fit barrel. Something like a .223 could be rechambered to a 22-250 and wouldnt need to have the barrel chopped down at all. However a different bolt face would be in order.

I'm sorry I was not clear. I'm talking about taking my 6x47 and having the bore opened up so I could turn it into a 6.5x47

It can be done only its not very pactical. The only thing you save is the cost of the
Barrel steel. Some are bored out and a sleeve installed. Ive seen that on an octogon barrel on an antique firearm. It made the bore shootable and didn't hurt thevalue of that particular rifle very much.

I agree with GerryM and HHgunNut, mostly done on obsolete types and break actions because of the appendages. Sounds like having the 6 and wanting the 6.5 might be a candidate for a switch barrel!

Preacher is correct. Jim Dubell does outstanding work. After reaming and boring Jim cut rifles the barrel. It can save you lots if you have existing iron sights, quarter ribs, or is an unusual barrel.

You save more than the cost of the barrel. The threaded shank is still good and if you are re-chambering to a cartridge that cleans up the existing chamber it will work. I have a .243 that became and .260 that then became a .308. Saved something like $600 by using the same family of cartridges and they shoot very well.
