Rifle Accurizing Service

There are a bunch of them out there. I think "Hill Country Rifle" started this service years ago with now many other gunsmiths jumping in on this market.

Who have you used?

Who would you recommend?

There's quite a few variables with the above list that I think I'd need to know before I did anything like that but for the most part I don't think I would go for a plan like that and use the factory barrel. I'd opt to spend the extra few hundred bucks and have a good premium aftermarket barrel chambered and hung.

Yeah, replacing the barrel with a nice custom is always good, unfortunately that might not be the answer. Usually, a trigger is in order too. How about glass bedding??
The problem with the plan laid out above is this, how inaccurate is the gun?? For example, "bore scoping the chamber" {by this I think they mean assessing the throat for wear}, "checking the lug contact" and "machining a new target crown" will not take a gun that shoots 2 1/2" groups and make it a tack driver.
One problem with all these accuracy tricks is that they can be very confusing and/or deceiving. There are many "benchrest" tricks that we'd all like to do to our rifles, but few that will make the big change that might be needed. Bushing the firing pin in a bolt gun wont take it from 3" groups down to 1/2".
What kind of accuracy are you realistically expecting?? My favorite is when someone posts a "what's wrong with this rifle??" thread and then puts up a photo of a target with 15 "one ragged hole" groups. This can be misleading to the guy that's taking his hunting rifle to a "smith" for accuracy problems.

I would just have the barrel replaced as previously stated, have it bedded, and install a new trigger. 99% of any issues would have been resolved. Most of the things mentioned in HCR does little to fix a problem other than the bedding... If your crown isn't damaged and if they recrown it what was gained?

Waste of money, most rifles will shoot if you put in a trigger, bed and free float and tune a load for them. All thing that you should be able to do your self or start learning to do. Do not be afraid jump in you learn by doing, if you get stuck there are good people on this site that will help you out.

I'd probably be leery of anyone that guaranteed 3/4 groups at 100 with factory ammo and a factory barrel.

What happens when you can't produce those kinds of groups do you get your money back or do you have to just keep trying different ammo till it'll shoot a 3/4 group or do you get the, well it shot 3/4 groups for me speech?

I just can't imagine a GS giving that kind of accuracy guarantee with a factory barrel and shooting off the shelf factory ammo. I'd be a little surprised if any gunsmiths would give that kind of a accuracy guarantee shooting factory ammo.

That's not to say some factory ammo hasn't shown to shoot some pretty impressive groups but it definitely varies, sometimes a lot, from Lot # to Lot # so getting factory ammo to consistently hold those kinds of groups is often a challenge.
