Richards Microfit Stocks

Lot of good discussion on this topic in the past here. To save you some waiting time, use the forum search function and try "Richards Microfit" or just "Microfit". ;)

Yes... good guys and very nice stocks for the money. Finish was a bit rough when I got the stock but smoothed out nicely. Inletting was very good.

My experience with a MicroFit stock was very bad. Stock was very, very rough on the outside and required hours and hours of sanding. Looked like it had been cut with a hand chisel. The rear inletting, for a Savage action, was way too aggressive (too much wood removed). As a result, the whole rear action area of the stock had to be "re-built" with glass and epoxy -- at considerable expense. Honestly, when there are very many great vendors of laminated stocks at reasonable prices, I don't know why you would select Richard's Microfit. For a few dollars more you can have a superb laminated stock, with flawless inletting, that' pretty much ready to clear-coat after 20 minutes of prep. With the Micro-fit, in my experience, you'll have to do a TON of finish work.

In my experience with Richard's Micro Fit stocks, it depends on what day of the week the stock is cut.
Some days are WTF is this? >:( Other days are not too bad. Depends on how sharp the cutting tools are. Could be a dull Axe, Chain Saw,run over by a truck day or even :) 8). (Kinda like running a shooting forum on the WWW) ;)
If you know going in that you'll have to plan on doing a little (or a lot) of work of to get it to fit and finish ready, you won't be surprised at what you get when it shows up.
If you want a "drop in" stock, spend the $$ and be done with it.
If you don't mind working on it to make it "yours", the price and style selections can't be beat.
I've had them run from :o to 8). At least 6+ stocks from them so far.
If it isn't excatly what you want, you can modify to your specs. Better than cutting on a HIGH $$ stock. ;)
They (RMF) arn't know fro being fast with email replies. Send in your order (snail mail),
with the $$, tell them what you want and be surprised when it shows up. Takes about 3 months + or-.
RMF stocks arn't for everybody. ;)

Hi Guys ,
thanks for your input, I live in Glasgow Scotland and have had dealings with this company,I ordered a tactical inletted for a browning long action,I have a Eurobolt,no problems with inletting furniture fitted ok , unfortunately they sent me a ruger stock the first time ,I contacted them and was sent the correct stock which in fact required little work done to it,I waited three months for the wrong stock and a further two for the correct one, since then I have had a 28'' Border Barrel fitted to my action the stock pillar bedded and crafted, I have mixed feelings as to Microfit Stocks, they did cock up the first time but made every effort to correct it,judge for yourselves , with a little effort this is how it turned out after I oiled the the laminate.

By default, Richards is the ONLY manufacturer I know that offers a nice assortment of bench, tactical, or target styled stock for the common Remington 700 in laminated wood....that isn't your typical sporter/carry configuration. Everybody else offers mainly a sporter stock or two. Who would these "very many vendors" of laminated stocks you refer to be ?? Boyds offers squat except thumbhole stocks, and your typical big name manufacturers like HS or McMillan are glass or composite stocks. Stocky's usually has nothing in stock (and is not a manufacturer). The third teir companyies might offer one high priced model in wood (Hollands for example), but that hardly qualifies in the "very many vendors" category. Not trying to be antagonistic with you..... just want to learn of a good source.

I built a sporterized VZ24 757 Mauser on a microfit stock. It was a laminated
stock. The action in-letting was extremely accurate. I mounted the action/barrel in the stock "as it came" to check out the performance of the barrel. Perfect!

Then, I finished the stock. As the stock was "99% finished" I did expect to remove a lot of wood. I finished up bedding the action and epoxying the pillar in place.

I now have a stock to be proud of!

They certainly are not "drop in" stocks. For the price it's to be expected that it'll take some work (perhaps lots of work) to finish one of their products. But if you like working with wood and are willing to invest the time and effort to produce something that's both functional and good looking then this may be the stock for you.
If you haven't tried it, "shaving" with a shard of glass in the final step before finish sanding flattens surfaces beautifully.

I don't expect a pre-inlet to be "drop-in", if it is there'll probably be gaps. But, I do expect the darned inletting to be reasonably straight and the holes properly placed. I'll stick to using Al Lind and Jim Bisio to turn wood for me. I get a piece I can 'deal' with, that way. The inletting will be straight and true, the guard scew holes 'll be in the right place, and there'll be a bit of 'extra' on the outside, so that I can "do my own thing" and personalize it to my style. You don't get that from Richards.

Stock-makers with a variety of designs (only a partial list):

Joel Russo, http://www.russoriflestocks.com
Carl Bernosky, http://www.carlbernosky.com
Master-Class Stocks, http://masterclassstocks.com
Precision Rifle and Tool, http://precisionriflesales.com
Shurley Brothers Stocks, http://www.shurleybrothers.com
Bill Shehane (D&B Supply), http://www.scopeusout.com

Grizzly Industries, www.grizzly.com, now also carries a variety of laminated stocks -- though this is not Grizzly's primary business.

You also mentioned Stockys Stocks. I checked today and they have many dozens of laminated stocks for Rem 700 in inventory right now. Prices are very affordable.

Kelblys.com is also now carrying the very nice GRS stocks from Norway. These are basically drop-in ready:

Thanks for all your comments ,I appreciate that some of you guys have not had a good experience with Microfit Stocks,it was only after I bought this stock that I realized perhaps I chose unwisely,However after reading your thoughts on this post,I guess I was lucky that I ended up with a reasonable piece of Laminate which in all honesty I had little work to do,the rifle shoots well and is very accurate, I am not sure just how popular Brownings are where you live and how readily you can source inletting for this action,I had a really frustrating experience until I checked out Richards Microfit stocks which offered a large selection of stocks for the Browning long actions, most manufacturers of stocks offer them in popular actions, had I had a Remington,Ruger ,Sako, etc, I would have probably chosen more wisely,so in the end I have been fortunate and am aware that there are guys out there who have been frustrated and disappointed by their experience with Microfit and am not surprised by their comments,on the other hand there are guys equally happy with their Stock from Microfit,I am a new to this site and hope I have not offended anyone with my thoughts on this post, thanks again for your comments.

Forum boss,
Thanks for those sources. I don't ever recall any of those companies you've listed coming up in google or in the searches. Other then finding the usual suspects like Richards and Boyd's, my only other means to discover a stock maker was if a shooter in the "Gun of the week" happened to make mention of his stock.

Morse,

That is a VERY nice looking rifle you're showing in that photo! Looks like you got your Rrichard's stock to work just fine for you.

If you order the BR stock there is plenty wood there to do anything you want with it including turning it upside down on your mill and making a lowrider out of it. And we don't KNOW where some of the fine stockmakers get their blanks.

Its very nice that the Forum Boss choose to list all those other stockmakers. But this thread was started with the intention of a providing information about a specific stock maker, Richards Micofit. In fact, others have been criticized for jumping on or "hijacking" threads which IMHO is EXACTLY what the Forum Boss did on this thread. Yeah we know you run the show, but how about practicing what you preach!!!!!!!!!!!! And for what its worth, Richards Microfit stocks cost a fraction of what those other stockmakers the Forum Boss listed cost.
