Richard's micro fit stocks ?

So im about to order a marksman style stock for a howa 1500 in 243 win, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this stock ? And what kind of work will need to be done. If i like it enough ill order one for my Rem 700. Any pics of this stock you have would be appreciated

You will find a good picture of this style on Richards website under "Target Styles". The Howa 1500 action is listed under the 99% inletted, press fit type and is available for a sporter or varmint barrel inlet. Most of your work will be smoothing the outside of the stock and putting finish on it. I have finished a number of these stocks, mostly laminated and have found that I usually also shape them on the outside a little to my liking before I start smoothing with a file and sanding. I think they are a good value for the money. I know several top notch Palma shooters that have been using their prone stocks for a number of years.

I concur with both the above comments. They are rough in every way but there is enough material to work with. You can have extra material left in places that you want it. Definitely plan on glass bedding as their inletting is, at times, cut by hand with God knows what power tool. They are strong enough though and you can get them to finish and shoot well. Price is tough to beat relative to the style and wood options.

I also concur with the above I have done quite a few and I could send pictures if you pm me with your e-mail They are rough to start with and the inletting is rough requiring glass bedding with pillars a good choice. But the finished product is great if you spend the time on them and Finnish! I use the laminate mostly but I have done some with high grade walnut that turned out great! I would much rather have a Richards micro fit than the boyds!!RW

Good info to know, does anyone know if there is an single shot follower made for a howa 1500 sa ? Thay have hinged floor plates not really sure witch route to go with that on this stock.

In the past I have simply purchased single shot adapters meant for Remington rifles and adapted them for use in other rifles. Usually there is not much that needs doing especially since I generally glue them in with epoxy. They can always be removed with the application of moderate heat.

Not for competition. If I wanted to do an inexpensive one I would start with a Savage or go a little better and start with a Remington.

The walnut stock on the top photo is on a 270 WSM. The two laminate stocks are on a 243 wssm and 223 wssm. All three are Winchester Model 70s.
BTW, I no longer own any of the three.

Over the years I have built 32 stocks from blanks I ordered from Richards. However none of them have been in finished just Semi-Inlet or no inlet, so I can't speak to that. I like doing the shaping and bedding and i get extra wood, so I have been happy. I had one issue and they were quick to make it right. None of the blanks were bad wood. I guess some people have problems with everything. I guess I have been lucky, 32 times. ???

Mike, When I agreed with FGuffey was about their inletting or lack of. I believe I have had 3. I'm a slow learner. The inletting looked like a dull router made one pass. That ain't semi inlet in my book. The wood itself was ok.
