Richard's micro fit stocks ?

mikegaiz said:
Over the years I have built 32 stocks from blanks I ordered from Richards. However none of them have been in finished just Semi-Inlet or no inlet, so I can't speak to that. I like doing the shaping and bedding and i get extra wood, so I have been happy. I had one issue and they were quick to make it right. None of the blanks were bad wood. I guess some people have problems with everything. I guess I have been lucky, 32 times. ???
I thought Richards sold pre-inletted stocks, not blanks. To me (and most others) a blank is a chunk of hardwood, suitable for making a gunstock out of. A pre-inlet has been rough machined from a blank for a particular model firearm, in a particular style. With a blank, a stock can be made for any firearm that the blank has wood enough to accomodate. There alot better "pre-inletters" around than Richards. (I had some time to waste on the web, this morning, Butch!)

I've ordered several Richard"s stocks over the years. They are good solid stocks for the $$. Never had a problem. Even ordered a couple "seconds" and they turned out well. I currently have three more of their stocks ready to be finished. One for a Sako and two for Remingtons.

This is a stock that Mr. Kobe did for me.

They do sell unfinished blanks of anything they sell...
No cut outs, no nothing, just a chunk of wood.....

Some years ago a guy I know sent them a piece of Awesome Presentation American Walnut for a 1909 Argentine Mauser he had spent a lot of $$$$ on. JUNK NOW!

Many of the professional stock makers have duplicators. They use them on a "one on one" basis and, many of them do duplication work for others. In the past, I used Ed Shulin, until he sold to a protege, and I then used him for a couple, but then something happened and I lost track of him. Then I found Jim Bisio at Heritage Walnut, who has done a few for me and I've always been happy with his work. These are not "drop-in", or "press fit",, you have to do some inletting & shaping before finishing. It does cost more, overall, but you don't get junk! (I think he charged me $125 + shipping to turn a Blank I provided) I have a client sending me 3 pre-inlets from Richards and I'm dreading it! I wish he'd have consulted me before he ordered them! If you have any stock making skills at all, do yourself a favor and run away from Richards marketing hype! Ya' , the pics on their web site might be pretty, but what you get might not be!

I agree. Last year I sent a blank to Shane Thompson to become a semi-inlet for my Winchester 70 and was very glad I did. Would much rather do that again than get a stock from Richards.
