Richard's Lowrider Version 2 And The Little Diamondback That Could...with PHOTOS and DATA

The website states 5/8" lower. Should be a real help. The "hollowed out" fore end though is not legal in IBS Score. Sure is a beautiful design though.

Reed -- this is for LR stuff.

ChuckW2 asked about the load development for this rifle:

Decided to try something new with this rifle:

NOTE: Something seems a little off with my poder:velocity ratio...I am only getting 2850 with 31.4 varget/105sc/450/lapua/20thou in/brouton 8tw-5c...SO, EITHER the chrono is reading low, or the skinny bullets,0.2425)/large bore,0.2432) combo is losing me fps, but the barrel does SHOOT!!

-

LOAD DEVELOPMENT: I ran round robin 3-shot groups at 100yds from 29.5-31.9gns in 0.2gn increments, split into 2 overlapping ladders since i underestimated the powder i would need to get the speed i wanted)

The agg of 13-3shot groups shot round robin on two different days was 0.313" with several .1's and .2's surrounding 30.4 and 31.4gn charges.

I plotted group centers on an identical target and split the difference of the load where the groups shifted the least.

being 30.4 and 31.4gns of varget.

-

NEXT UP: 300yd 5-shot groups:

Due to the impending cold weather last week, i had to settle for a windy 75deg. day to shoot instead of a windy 35deg day :D

Performance at 300yds was too close to call, so i used the 31.4 load which was JUST starting to show ejector marks at 75deg...with NO hard bolt lift NOR cratered primers.

-

ROUND 2:

Norma N202/105Sc/20thou in/450 etc.

ran a 1-shot ladder at 300yds.

group was 1.5" high by 1.25 wide with a noticable cluster, near zero vertical) centered around 29.9gns.

This load had a FLAT .5MOA high group at 300yds, but showed the highest ES tested. I will revisit this load...

FIRST RESULTS:

31.4varget/105/450/lapua/20thou in

Got to cristen the new rifle this saturday in a 200-500yd Grounshog Match at www.mifflincosportsmens.com

She was going against several PPC's, 6.5-284s and other 1000yd light guns...and came out on top in the Limited Class.

The PPC's and BR's with midweight flatbase bullets,80gn fowler) were getting THRASHED by the wind.

Conditions were absolutely horrible!! 5-15 mph constant wind that would switch 180deg in 10 seconds!!! and NO WINDFLAGS!!

during sight in at 500yds, using a rock above and behind the target, i hit about 4" left of POA with one shot...added a couple clicks...the wind switched and gusted a bit and the next shot went almost 3FEET to the right!! This was with a 105 scenar at 2850fps  WOULD HATE TO HAVE A PPC IN THESE CONDITIONS!!

Waited without adjusting the scope till the wind returned to normal...next shot centered the rock i was aiming at...

Went to the record target and got of 3 rounds...then the mirage BOILED BAD!!so i waited...and went back to the rock...hit 4" left again, so i held right on the g-hog and put the last 2 shots down. Luckily they all made it on the groundhog!!

I had shooter malfunctions, :D ) at 200yds, but at 300, the group was flat! about 3/4" high and at 500 4 shots went into 1" vertical, but one shot dropped down 1.5-2" not sure why, but i dont think it was the gun.

Going to run 30.4varg, 31.4 varg, and 29.9 N202 against each other at 500yds to see if there is any clear winner.

Chuck -- i think that was everything...

I think i'll start with 300yd 1-shot ladders from now on. Then progress to 5-shot groups to narrow down the load if there is noticable vertical clusters

it is far enough to show separation, yet you can still spot and plot your own shots.

Seems to be liking 31.4 varget
105 scenars 20thou in the lands,OAL ~2.368)
450 primer
2850fps

Load testing using UNPREPPED brass is showing just over 1" vertical at 500yds in BAD conditions so far

Going to try 15thou off the lands as well as some other heavie's berger, CR, amax, BIB...eventually

115 DTAC:
Tried ONE... made it to the 100yd target and cut holes woth a 105 scenar fouler...must be flying pretty straight from the LONG Broughton 8tw barrel, actually longer than 8tw)

Will have to try them at longer range...

with 0.113 Freebore, and with the 115 20thou in the lands the bearing/BT jcn is just above the neck/shoulder jcn.

more later...

Jason: Interesting reading on your testing of the 105 scenar and varget. Just started load development through my kreiger 8 twist last weekend. 80gr Bergers, 88 gr High BC Flat Base Bergers and 105 gr Berger VLD's. The 80's shot like a house on fire at 200yds with 32gr of n-135 .015" into lands. The 88's and 105's were all over the place. Used varget for the 88's from 30.6gr to 31gr .015" into lands. Used Re-15 for the 105's from 30.6 to 31gr .010" into lands. Sounds like you've had good luck with Varget with the 105's. Think I'll try it also with my Berger 105's. Any experience using the Berger High BC 88's? Strange shaped bullet, was thinking this bullet should not be into the lands so far, maybe off the land .010" Any thoughts on the Berger 105's & 88 HBCFB?

sh:

the current load has left nothing to be desired.

Last 5 shot groups in a match at 200, 300 and 500 were very good for the conditions and tough to beat in general.

the 500yd group was 1.9" wide in switchy winds and less than 1" high.

that is sub 1/4MOA at 500 for vertical.

almost zero brass prep, and no meplat trimming ;)

will post pics later...

Even thou i am thouroughly satisfied with the current performance, i do plan to play with some other bullets

106 clinch river
95BIB
95 berger VLD

That is probably it, as i dont want to ruin a good thing with too much experimentation.

Taking it to 1000yds saturday.
