Final Photos! - Decided to try making a HBR Stock.

Re: Trigger inlet and stain - Decided to try making a HBR Stock. Bored!

It's hanging down the basement now waiting for the stain to dry completely. I though about using a DuraPearl top coat, but I'm just going to use a spray on Urethane to finish it off. I don't want to spend too much more time on this one. I'm already looking forward to building a few more of these with a higher quality plywood.

Looks pretty good for a first attempt!

Two suggestions:

You can buy pretty decent baltic birch ply at Home Depot for about $40 for a 4'x4' sheet. Ought to be enough in a 3/4" sheet to laminate a couple of stock blanks & you can cut out the voids/overlaps/irregular layers.

While you're there take a look in paint section for any kind of sanding sealer, preferably something without a filler additive. Use this stuff on the finished-sanded blank before staining & the results will end up more uniform & lighter too, otherwise the wood grain really soaks stain up leading to irregularities (particularly in plywood products owing to how it changes the wood's texture during fabrication).

What kinda hardware are you gonna mount onto that stick?

I'm going to use some high end void and overlap free furniture grade plywood for my next couple stock builds. I agree with the wood sealer. I was going to use it this time around, but just wanted to finish off this test stock and move on to a few higher quality stocks.

A heavy barrel Savage Target Action in .284 Win is going in this stock for now. I'll probably keep this stock around more for measurements and to tide me over for now.

Sparky sign me up for one un-inletted blank. ;D Keep on posting. This has been very interesting watching your progress. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

great job on the stock. its more work than u thought at first wasnt it. well the next one will go much faster. one thing that ive found that helps a lot with the staining is to use pre stain conditioner. u can get a quart pretty cheap at homo depot or lowes and it makes all your staining blend together nice and it absorbs evenly. hope this helps

Actually, it wasn't bad at all. I'm already planning to make several more with the wood I already have and some higher end wood as well. I may even make one using laminated 3/4" Zebrawood. I saw the Zebrawood the other day at a custom wood shop and fell in love with it. Of course it's was the 2nd most expensive wood they sell.

I just finished filling the rear pillar and I'm making the butt plate now. Should be all done and assembled this weekend. I'll post some final pictures, pictures of all the tools I used, including the router bits, and answer any outstanding questions this weekend.

Thanks again everyone for your comments, support and suggestions!

One caution: if you have any allergies, be careful working with exotic woods. There are some that even for folks with no allergies will really rock them off base from compounds in the wood.

Rosewood and Cocobolo are two famous for this, the Zebrawood you mentioned not so often but these aren't like birch or maple. Use a good respirator when doing ANY kind of sanding operations too, wood dust is almost as bad as tobacco once inside your lungs....

Good advice. Thank you. Already have enough health issues and don't need anymore.

i see you talking about a higher end plywood, but will this 1 hold up for the most part if it is sealed off good? just wondering becuase you made this look really easy, not to mention the stock looks very good. do you happen to have an idea on the weight? i would like to try this but i would also like to keep the weight down as much as possible.

thanks

The stock is a little lighter than it appears in these last photos, but here it is. I made the butt plate out of a 1/4" stock spacer and some shock absorbing foam.

I'm thinking about trying this out too. Have you made any more stocks since the first one? I'm also curious how the plywood is holding up. I'd love to do one of those multi colored laminated stocks like the one on the bottom of this page http://richardscustomrifles.com/fancywood.htm. Great looking stock. I'm really impressed.

Yes, I made another stock out of Zebra Wood. Currently working on a second Zebra Wood stock. I also have several partially finished blanks made out of furniture grade plywood. Not sure if I'll finish off the plywood stocks next or try another exotic wood. Best of luck with your project. Hope my posts help.

I meant to post this link for the zebra wood stock build.
