Richard microfit stocks

I bought a Richard's stock which was supposed to be AA Fancy walnut. I would say it's neither AA or fancy, but it is a pretty nice piece of wood. The inletting was perfect but the exterior was only one step up up from a log, plus it was HUGE. It was sold as "Unfinished and ready for final sanding and finish". What a joke!

I'm sure half the weight of the stock wound up on my shop floor. I'm an experienced woodworker with all the appropriate tools, but if you hope to finish your Richard's stock with a piece of 100 grit sand paper, you're in for an unpleasant surprise. The stock, except for the very accurate inletting, looked like it was made by a chain-saw sculptor. My first tool was a table saw, the second one a big band-saw.

It took a LOT of work over many days, but must be said the finished product is quite nice and I get a lot of complements. But it took a long while to get the stock delivered and the Richard's customer service was horrible; nearly impossible to contact anyone either by Email or telephone.

My several Boyd's stocks are a great value. My last one took about a week to arrive and it was completely ready to mount my barreled action and shoot, a process which would have taken two minutes had I not elected to epoxy bed the action. Plus it was inexpensive.

My next stock will be a Boyd's too.

It "usually" takes up to a couple + months to get your stock order BUT, they CAN turn one out faster if really needed. Placed my order, waited patiently for my stock to show up. Ordered a right hand stock cut for a left hand action. Pretty simple. Cut the basic stock configuration THEN cut the inlet. Sounds pretty easy to us but they just can't figure that out.
Received the stock then commenced to come unglued when I took a real good look at it. Cut for a Savage short action. Right hand stock cut looked pretty good BUT the "left hand " action cut had the top bolt release cut on the left side?? WTF?? Only difference between a Savage right and left hand action is the bolt handle slot cut.
What they had done was make a mirror image cut for the bolt release. Don't ask me how, but they did.
Just a "little" pushed out of shape at the results of a 2 + month wait. So, rather than try getting on the phone and ripping someones face off, I chose to drop them a note by snail mail. At the time, better for all involved.;)
Got an email reply and had a replacement stock "cut correctly" in just over a weeks time.
The stock that I had received first ? Sold it the next day here on the forum so it didn't have to be returned and the guy that bought it didn't have a long wait. Had to tell them "more than once" that the first stock was sold and didn't have to be returned. Out of all the stocks I've bought from Richard's Micro-Fit over the years, only one was returned and that was because of a color difference than what I had expected.
Some of the very early stocks had problems with the laminates coming apart but nothing in the last 10 to 15 years that I've heard of. Still one of the better deals out there. I think I've heard of Richard's Micro-Fit as being referred to as a "gunsmith's stock. Very well described.

"Hopefully they have older more experienced beavers working in the back now"?? Probably still can't speak English and still don't know how to sharpen a tool.
Spoke to "one of the boys" in the back shop a few years back about returning a stock that came in the wrong color (remember, I mentioned they're color blind) and he was actually upset that I would even consider a return.
Thinking more like a little "attitude adjustment" at the customer service area might be in order.;) A "BIG STICK or RED HOT POKER might make a big difference??

Just as there are a few misguided zealots who will defend Fred Moreo and Sharp Shooter Supply, there are actually some fans of Richards Microfit. "Never Again" would be the only appropriate mantra in my experience. What they sent, after too-long of a wait, ended up literally being burned in my fireplace. It created less ash than a Duraflame log, but cost 25x as much. Even so, it was used appropriately.
