Revolver help? what am I wanting?

I looked on smith and wesdon website, but all I saw was 5 inch barrels.

I want a smith and wesson performance center 357 mag, stainless, 8 to 10 inch barrel double action revolver.....

I am not sure if they have any with that long of a barrel in their current catalog. But I would be looking at the 586/686 or 627. I have both in 4 and 6 inch models and they are great. I did see a 686 competitor PC with a 6 inch on the web site.

What is your intended use? Hunting? If so I have shot and killed quite a few deer with my revolvers. The 4 inch 586 has more kills then the 6. I do Cary that one more so that could be the reason.

Maybe its just me, I have had a lot of very nice classic S&W revolvers. I had a '75 M29 that was very accurate. Other than that not a single one impressed me. On the other hand rugers have consistently shot well, even though they are not in the same league for finish. I like to see about 2" at 50 yards off a rest. I am not a big handgun guy and dont play with them much. My 4" 686 7 shot was ok accurate.

Not really sure of your intended purpose, for your pistol. I have an old 8 3/8" model 29, and also several 6" revolvers. In my opinion, the 6" guns are easier to shoot off handed. I shoot mainly cast bullets in specials. A steady diet of heavy loads jacked bullets, is a recipe for premature wear and failure. Regularly bring a pistol to the range and shoot it while my barrel is cooling.

100_0457.jpg I've had two 686's, both six inchers. One was the first of the run, back in the eighties, and my current one is a "-6". They both came with a few bugs, nothing serious, easily taken care of. I ended up loving them both.

They are great shooters, and I have spit out a few one inch 50 yd groups with them. (from the bags) Have also spit out a few one inch 25 yard groups, (two handed standing).

I guess if I was going to deer hunt with one, I'd get a 8 incher, or I believe they are actually 8 3/8". They used to make one with a four position front sight as a silhouette shooter.

Triggers on these guns are great, and if you want to, you can get as skilled at double action use, as you can single action, and I recommend it. jd

There is a great promotion going on right now with Brownells & Smith and Wesson.

Buy a new S&W Revolver, and get:

1. $100 Brownells gift card
2. $50 Rebate from Smith and Wesson

The S&W Rebate ends 12/31/2017. The Brownells promo ends 12/25/2017.

I own some long-barrel Performance Center Revolvers. Honestly, unless you want a hunting rig, you'll find the 6" barrel balances much better than 8 or 10". Of the Brownells Sale guns, this .44 mag M629 is the one I recommend for target work. Large calibers make bigger holes -- you can load down to .44 SPL. I prefer the half underlug barrels.

I have 3 686's, all from the 80's & 90's. The 4" was a police trade-in when our local PD went to Glocks. The 6" has the adjustable front sight and I competed at PPC with it. That's why it has the stainless under-lug. It added weight and was held flat against the side of the barricades. The 8 3/8" has a trigger job by Cylinder & Slide and has taken a few deer here in Illinois.

Tom Kilhoffer did the trigger on the 6" model. It is sweet. They are all 6-shot 357's.

I moved away from long barrels several years ago due to balance, carry and weight issues in the field. For hunting I much prefer either my 5-inch 629 or my 5 1/2 inch Ruger Super Blackhawk for ease of carry and good sight radius.

thanks for the pics... so 6-8 inch barrel is about right... i dont like looks of anything shorter

Congrats on the baby girl... That being said a 4" model 29 in the hand when answering the door once she starts dating will ensure good behavior... Or a Ruger Super Blackhawk.. A buddy of mine gets 4" groups at a 100 with his Black Hawk.. But he is a damn good pistol shooter.

Back in the day when I carried a concealed service revolver it was a M66 2 3/4". I could shoot inch groups with it at 25 yards but I suspect if I had a 6 or 8" barrel there would have been a significant increase in velocity. In those days the barrel selection was 2 3/4, 4, 6 & 8 3/8". don't know if it's still the same.

I have a few 686 and 29's. Im a performance center collector- cant resist. But for the money the gp100 match champion i bought a few months ago has turned out very nice. Still a PC guy but i like a gp100
