If you are thinking of retirement you only need two things. A good TV, A good wife and they both have to work. Seriously to need to plan ahead on what you will do with the extra hours every week. If you have a hobby other than shooting expand on it. I am a retired Millwright which means over the years I learned pipefitting, electrical, carpentry etc. from the guys in our department. I had a two page long list of home improvements and honey dos when I retired. I have been retired 20 years now so the list is pretty short. I have one friend that invested in a mill and lathe and rebuilds old tractors. Another was a machinist and now is a gunsmith. The list goes on and on.

Forum Boss, you got to have the genes and live a healthy life, plus a little luck to make the century mark. My mother missed it by six months, her sister is still living at 95 and my dad's brother is still going at 93. My father smoked all his life and checked out at 67. FIL, same deal and checked out at 66. I'm glad they both retired early. As always, YMMV.

Don’t smoke...my FIL is only 60 and was diagnosed with cancer last week. He lost 40lbs in a year. We finally convinced him to see a dam doctor. I just hope it’s not too late. F***ing smoking man....

Wife substitutes coca powder and ground coffee for the espresso beans to roll them in (reduces stickiness) and gives it the kick I need to keep going during the day. There are many recipes for Energy Bites, but the key ingredients in reducing inflammation are the Ginger and Turmeric. Be sure to get the Tumeric Curcumen type. You can also add Tumeric capsules to your daily diet too, that helps but lacks the energy kick these provide.

With all the supplements I take, when I die, the Dr's will have to beat each of my organs to death with a stick.
Just shy of 180 pounds, gained about 30 pounds over about 8 years or so since I quit working, and that extra weight will hold me over in case I get sick.

I retired from "full time" work for someone else 25 years ago at age 49. I have worked for myself since then. Much less stress and frustration. lots of prairie dog shooting trips and range time. also volunteer work and helping other folks. Life is good.

1. Everyone's situation is different.
2. When you get about 59 1/2 ask the person that does your taxes to advise you about when to retire.
3. Then ask a Social Security lawyer the same question. His fee will be worth it.
4. The Social Security Admin will not tell you everything or the maximum you are eligible for. Trust me.
5. ***** If you are retired from the military or navy you do not need any Medicare Supplemental insurance at all. Tricare For Life takes care of that and prescriptions. Go to a ophthalmologist (MD) {NOT optometrist} for ALL of your eye care, and Medicare and Tricare For Life will pay for it. For dental there are about five different plans that you can sign up for and it will be deducted from your pension.
6. Check for states that don't tax pensions and at what level they tax Social Security.
7. Almost everyone will benefit from signing up for Medicare at 65 unless you have a darn good company pension (see # 2 & #)

I retired when I was 44 in 2002. I should of retired after the 6th grade if I knew it was going to be like this. A job is nothing but work.

Dang, you never really worked long enough to know what a job is really about.

I worked my butt off for 10 years owning my own business. After I did the cop thing for a little while I bought 2 tandem axle cabovers and bought 4 refrigerator trailers and got my own operating authority and found my own customers. I use to haul canned and frozen foods and produce and delivered that stuff to all the union food warehouses in the Northeast and sometime down to Florida. Anyone who has ever done that knows what I'm talking about. When you get there your their personal slave until you unload that whole trailer. Sometimes if it's on a repaired pallet called a double stringer, they make you put it on one of their perfect unrepaired pallets or certain places want you to put it on their small pallets. Then there are the frozen food warehouses like Shaw's and Hannaford Brothers in Maine who receive frozen stuff at 2 in the morning. Try driving 12 hours and getting there and waiting for them to call you over the CB and give you a bay to back into and then unload a whole trailer at 2 am in a -20 degree warehouse. The only people who know about that stuff are people who have been owner-operators. It ain't easy.

I know most people don't have this situation but I was 175# of muscle and bone in 2009 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I didn't have any body fat to live off of during treatment so my Dr. told me that going forward to try and keep about 15 to 20 #s of fat just to have some buffer if there's ever another need. I'm cancer free, praise God, and holding around 185# with a little less muscle.

That’s interesting about the body fat. i knew it could be storage for lean times but didn’t think of it that way. Im prob 20% not 20# so that means 40# BF for me. I guess I could afford to lose a little Best Wishes on your continued cancer free status.

No telling how long I could live off of mine. A few more pounds might never die.
