Retirement

You're fortunate in that your avocation (building rifles) can keep you just as busy and probably well enough funded as your 9 to 5 job. Having a side business can forestall the feeling of worthlessness that accompanies so many retirements. I'm convinced that feeling of dread is what cuts short the lives of so many retired workers.

I'm almost 70 and simply cannot afford retirement, nor can I stand the idleness and unanswered need to build something after so many years in the aircraft business. So I'm doing it again working 60 to 70 hours a week building UAS aircraft for a startup business. I couldn't be happier!

Retire? NEVER!
I’m almost 65 and physically I don’t know if I could do it so you’re an inspiration to me.

It ain't easy, and I can barely get out of bed some days. I spend most of my day on my feet, bent over a table building, repairing and laying carbon fiber and epoxy into molds. Hard work for a man half my age, but incredibly rewarding.

The one thing I can say makes it possible is my wife's Power Balls that she makes from ground up dates, seeds, nuts and several well known anti-inflammatory herbs. They really do help with the aces and pains I feel every day after half a century of hard work. When I first tried them, it felt like I lost 10 years off my life. Turmeric Curcumin and Ginger root are the secret ingredients.

I will be 66 in October. So-called "full SS" benefit for birth year 1955 supposedly is 66 plus 2 months. Right now that is my target.

The real question is whether to stay in CA given the corrupt scoundrels in charge, high cost of living, and exorbitant taxes.
Don't stay! I know you probably have family and friends but just think! You'll be giving them somewhere new to go on vacation or trips!!

Boss: GET OUT OF THERE!!! Find a tax free state that isn’t on fire every 6 months!
I highly recommend Texas! C’mon down!

Thanks for the secret info

Today I heard through the grape vine that I was retiring next year. Not unless I win the lottery lol. I am going to try all little bit of a different scheduling process and have not taken in much work recently because I am trying to get caught up but retirement is not in my future for a very very long time probably ever. Just FYI
Good luck with the lottery , that’s my strategy as well.

That 8 percent is a trick. The government makes up their own math. You will get more but not what you think. They use 8 percent of what you would have gotten at 62 for each year. You have to live a long time to make up what you lost 65 to 70. It will help your wife if she out lives you to wait until 70. At 30 grand a year for 5 is 150 grand. Take a lot of 8 percents to make that back. Ask Clint. Are you feeling lucky
My last Social Security Statement clearly shows that the extra monthly payment at 70 is 28% higher than my full retirement payment when I am 66+. Obviously the 8% is calculated on the full retirement amount not the age 62 amount.

More like still working and earning a living wage. As far as intelligent. I know and have known many in that category. They don't know how big is a 2x4, need electric start lawn mowers, don't know what is a spark plug, don't know anything but what was their life's work, and overthink everything including when to take social security.
Looking at the stats, half of the white male population won't make it to 78.5 years, roughly the break even point. Having said that, the boomers have been known to think they'll live forever.

Recipe please!

And those years are spent pooping in a diaper.
Not necessarily. My uncle was able to retire at 60 by selling a business started by my Grandfather. That, combined with an inheritance from an East Coast relative, allowed him to live the next 40 years of his life with no income worries. That's right, he lived until Age 100 and was walking 2 miles a day until he was 97.

Lack of stress, reasonable diet, no smoking (ever), almost no drinking, low BMI, and a loving wife who did all the cooking, gave him the longevity. He was 165 lbs as a WWII Ensign, and never topped 185 his whole life. Something to be said for keeping off the pounds (lesson to myself -- I've averaged 2 lbs a year weight gain over the last 20 years and now am on a strict diet).
