Reticle appears to 'jump' when dry firing?

When dry firing, one of my rifles, winchester type action) makes my scopes reticle appear to 'jump' in random directions. Scope base and rings were removed and re-installed to verify tightness. I tried another scope, to make sure it wasn't the brand new leupold Mk4 scope and it did the same thing. Neither of my other rifle/scope combo's do this, and am now wondering if it's possibly just something common to this type of action, winchester)? Never had one before. Read about it being natural point of aim, or shooter error....but I put it in a large bench vise to eliminate the shooter variable, and it still does it. Trigger is just under 2 pounds. Anyone ever noticed this jump before? solution?

RC, This same thing happened to me earlier this year. It was on my RRA 223 varmint rifle with a bushnell elite 6x24x44,?)scope,heavy rifle, little recoil). I had a short scope riser on it and when I installed an extended riser and mover the scope forward a couple of inches the problem went away. SO my best guess is that you may be to close to the ocular lense when you pull the trigger. In my case my mind was probably telling my eye to move back a little because there might be recoil. Sorta similar to a flinch reaction.

I would have thought the erector tube inside also could be moving but I don't think that can happen with dry firing especially in a vise. Hope this helps and let us know if you find the solution. pdog2225
