researching the Sako 22-250

Hi all.
I am new to the site and am starting out on some long range shooting. I would like to purchase the Sako 22-250 and one of the problems I am finding is the barrel twist. All the ones I see are a 1 and 14 twist. What I am hearing is that with them taking out the lead in the cartridge, is that you need a 1 and 9 twist for the bullet to spin faster. Can someone help me with this dilemma? Thanks from a rookie!

Yes sakos are 14 twist... I had one... shot fkin awesome!! Sold it to my father in law. It will shoot 52gr berger bullets if reloaded for. It's a 300 to 400 yard gun imo. Lazer accurate though.

22-250 is not a long range caliber. It's a varmint caliber. You won't find a factory rifle with the right twist to shoot the heavy bullets to reach out a ways... if you want that custom build.

If you want longer range a 308 is good to start on.

7mm08, 300 win, 260... be my choices for a beguinner..

I much agree with this post. I shot and reloaded for 22-250 for about 30 years and although I enjoyed it tremendously, if I had it all to do over for varmints, targets, and wind bucking ability for longer ranges, I would have gone with at least something in the 6mm (.243) bullet caliber weight range. I expected a lot out of the .22-250 that it just couldn't do at longer ranges with those 52/55 grain class of bullets, but I was focused on the speed/muzzle velocity as being the primarily most important factor. Once I got involved with the 6mms (6BR/6dasher) cartridges, the error of my ways soon became obvious. JMHO
Best Wishes whatever you decide

Taking the lead out?....that's only the wacko's in Commyfornia. The rest of us should stay unmolested for a little while yet. Let's see what happens Nov. 2016.
BTW, he's asking a stability question using lead-free bullets...not if you think it's a great cartridge.
