Request for identification assistance for a stock

I purchased a Remington M40X stock on eBay, thinking that it was a short action, for met Remington 700.

It certainly looks to me (a novice) like a M40X stock. But it certainly isn’t a short action. 7 1/4” between bolt holes.

Can anyone tell me what rifle action/barrel will fit in this stock?

The bolt notch is swept back.

Not sure if butt plate is metal or plastic. Feels like metal.

The cheek has a cut out similar to M40X.

Wood grain is really nice, very worthy of restoring.! Looks like walnut to me.

Paid $200 for it.

Thanks in advance for your input

Long action Remington centerfire 700 bolt handle. Not for a 721(wrong safety cut and wrong bolt handle cut). No checkering so probably not from Remingtion. Notice the "64" in the action bed. Looks to be from that era. Highest probability is that it's an aftermarket stock from one of the big players in the 60's and 70's like Fajen or Bishop both from Warsaw Missouri.

Did you see the butt plate?

Well, that's because it's not a single shot stock. It's inletted for a long action ADL magazine box Model 700 Remington. Here's another dead giveaway clue that it's not from Remington. The only M700 based rifle that Remington made that didn't have any checkering on the stock (with the exception of the 788 which this stock isn't) was the Sportsman 78. The 78 was a M700 without any embellishments such as checkering or higher quality blueing. Those rifles were produced from 1978 to 1982. Even though it was a budget minded rifle, they all had sling swivel studs installed from Remington. The stock in question here has no studs. Nor does it have the same stock lines as the 78. I don't what the origin of this stocks is, but it certainly didn't come from Remington. One thing for sure is that it definitely isn't a 40X stock. If the eBay seller advertised it as a 40X stock it should be contested. Remington never made any long action 40X rifles.

Actually, not all of the 78 Sportsmans had sling studs installed.
Way back in the day I purchased a 78 in 243 Win and it did not have sling studs. It also had the later 700 style bolt handle.

It was a fantastic shooting rifle, right up to the point where the barrel gave up.

As soon as I looked at the images, I thought the stock was from a long action 78 Sportsman.

+1 for a Sportsman 78 long action.
This was my first purchase for a hunting rifle. The stock is made from birch I believe. ADL version of a Remington 700 with a plain rounded bolt handle(swept back but not embellished)

That stock does not appear to have a full ADL box inlet. I cant tell from these pics but if it does yes it goes to a sportsman 78 if the screw spacing is right. I had one for a couple years brand new in 30-06. It was definitely the k-mart basement budget model. Maybe we can get a pic of the full inlet?

After reading the responses, I believe that this stock came from from a Remington model 78. I looked at Google images of that model, and it looks like a logical match.

I will return this stock to the eBay seller, because it certainly isn’t a model 40x of any kind as advertised.

For a lower class of stock, it is a beautifully grained wood.

Thank you all very much for sharing your experience and knowledge. I appreciate your time here.
