Repeater problem

I have a Pierce short action, 700 clone, chambered in 6.5x 47 L. Its in a Bell and Carlson Stock in a BDL configuration. The problem I have is that I cannot get the thing to feed from the magazine. I load up 5 rounds chamber the first OK. After that it's a crap shoot as to how many will chamber. When it hangs up the nose of the bullet contacts the barrel below the bore. What I've noticed is as the bolt goes forward it noses down towards the magazine. I've tried bending the mag spring and replaced the follower with no improvement. Any suggestions on how to make this repeater repeat?

Thanks

If the spring for the follower has been removed, it is quite possible it was put back upside down. Try reversing the spring. I have seen several Remington short actions with this problem with the spring as the culprit.

Hi Ron: I had Similar problem with a Tikka 22-250 I converted to 6br. I added a small1/2" x 2" coil spring under the front of the follower and it fixed it. It's an issue for cartridges with little body taper. I also had to tweak my mag lips a little up.

What type/brand of magazine? AICS? What type/brand of Bottom Metal (DBM)? There are quite a few things that could be working against you. More information and photos may help us. The 6.5x47 is a shorter case than most magazines were designed for, this is why the front of the bullet "dips" as is pushed forward when feeding. You may need to tweak some things to get it to feed reliably. It sounds like the cartridge isn't being presented high enough. First thing I would look at is the mag DBM interface height, then feedlips and bullet height, then feedlip angles. Magazine systems / DBM are not plug and play, often they are a little bit custom.

Thanks for all the suggestions. However at this time I am not using a detachable mag. It is the standard Remington BLD internal setup.
I am thinking of switching to a chassis type stock. I'd hate to spend the money and have the same problem.

thanks again

Have you tried my suggestion? Though it looks like the magazine spring should work either way, if the correct end isn't against the follower the bolt movement can cause bullet noses to dip below the chamber entrance.

This does apply to the internal magazine/floorplate design common to the BDL design.

Just tried reversing the spring and it really helped. However, upon closer inspection I have another problem. When compared to one of my other bolt rifles I found the contact area between the bolt face and the rim of the top round is extremely small. This causes the bolt to ride over the case half way through the bolt travel. I'll post a couple pictures as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Here are the photos right feed.jpg left feed.jpg

you should send that pic to pierce. it looks like the feed rails are for 223 size cases
Yeah, it sure looks like the cartridge is being prevented from lifting enough for positive and consistent bolt face engagement. Probably will need opening slightly.

Thank you SSL and Dusty you hit the mark. The 6.5x47 and a good old 270 have the same head size. I measured the feed lips on my 270 and at the rear of the magazine it was 0.611" on the Pierce action is was 0.531.

I sent all this info off to Pierce, lets see what happens.feed lips.jpg
