Removing Moly Coating

I have several boxes of Combined Technology Failsafe bullets that I want to shoot but my rifle has never had moly coated bullets and I didn't know if I would be getting myself into trouble by shooting them. Can I remove the moly or is even a problem to shoot 100 bullets in a hunting rifle and then switch back to naked bullets? The third option is to trade or sell them. They are 7mm 140 grainers and the rifle is a 7mm STW. Thanks. Tom

Just shoot 'em up and clean using your regular technique when they're gone. No worries.

Tom: What alf says, shoot em and give the barrel a good normal cleaning. I put 350 moly coated thru one of my barrels, (Hart 22-250), stopped using moly, gave the barrel a real good cleaning & returned to naked bullets. No problems.

Any special cleaners needed to remove the moly? I have Butch's, Monana Extreme, and Bore Tech Eliminator that I normally use. Thanks for the input as I have never shot moly in my life. Tom

Tom: If you're only going to use 100 moly coated bullets, the amount of moly depostited in the bore will be minimal. I fired 350 & had no bad effects. Any of the solvents you mention will do the job, and when you return to "plain" bullets, you'll never know the difference. Your first 1 or 2 groups may be larger than expected but after those first firings all should return to normal. it's just a matter of getting the bore conditioned to the type of bullets you're using.

YOur Bore tech will take the moly out of your barrel. If in doubt, you can soak them in acetone or tumble them in your tumbler and the moly will come off.

Like Eric said, acetone in a jar, dump in the bullets, swish it around....viola, no more moly! ;)

Agreed, 100 moly bullets won't have any effect.

If I want the moly out, I just do my normal cleaning with Butch's via patch and brush; then scrub it with JB, clean that out and finally several brushed in coats of Bore Tech Moly Magic.
