Removing Moly?

Toolbreaker

Gold $$ Contributor
I was given 2 boxes of moly-coated Hornady AMAX bullets recently, but I'd rather not have the moly coating. My question is how to remove it? Tumbling with ???? I'm thinking that if the media is too aggressive, it'll damage the plastic tip, correct? Maybe there's a chemical that will remove it with a wipedown? Thanks in advance.

Just shoot them and clean your barrel good problem solved.I still have moly bullets to shoot up before I start my hbn coating.I have had zero problems with cleaning afterwards.

Thanks Jon. That was the original plan, but my concern was that this is a factory tube that fouls badly (although it's darn accurate). I wasn't sure if the moly would build up quickly in the throat area & give me fits removing afterwards.

Ive used my tumbler to remove and it works great!
as far as Amax's go most tumblers are plastic, im not positive but try for 30 mins and check em, when finished rinse off any residue with alcohol.

Thanks for the info, swed6.5. I think I'm going to load up 20 or so of the 200 & give them a run. If it's a real pain to get the moly cleaned out afterward, I'll tumble & wash down the rest of them.

"as far as Amax's go most tumblers are plastic..."

I never even put 2 & 2 together on this one... :-[. Thanks again for the green light.

Right on, at the rate of not being able to get the supplies we need when we want em, I think we all are going to be finding ways of making what we have work as good as it can. Im sitting on a large amount of moly's that ive been stipping clean as needed.

I haven another question re: removing moly.

How "thick" is the moly layer in the first place? I would imagine only a few microns at most, but it got me thinking. I shoot a .234 (6 mm) rifle. Coating my regular bullets (which I hope fit the barrel really snugly) would increase their diameter. If the fit to the barrel is as snug as I hope, the moly would be stripped in the places of contact within say a few inches. Without going into the advantages of moly-coating, would it not be better to coat bullets that were just that .00(0)1 smaller than the "regular" bullets?

If so, would de-coating factory moly's not render me "smaller" bullets? Probably hogwash when given a proper look at the numbers involved, but since i do not have those on hand I was hoping one of you would dispel my ramblings post haste.
