Removing Molly ????

I have a bunch of bullets that have been molly coated and have not shot or used that stuff in quite a few years. I have quite a few that are in unopened boxes and some that a friend molly coated. Some he did turned out nice and others not to swift. Most all my bullets are Nosler balistic tips and Berger with a few odds and ends. Is their a easy way to remove the molly and restore the bullets back to the way they where and not damage them. Also if it can be done i do not want to do it with a tumbler. Needs to be done without one. I hope their is a good solution or they are going buy buy for new ones. Thanks...........DAN

I did some yesterday. I put then in a tumbler with a little media and bore solvent. It should remove the moly. then tumbler in regular media to shine.

Tumbling's the easiest way, but if you're adverse to that the only way I know is to wipe each bullet off with something like the commercial wet hand wipes you can buy at any grocery or drug store.

Try soaking them first in a 50:50 solution of cider vinegar & water. I got that tip from another shooter when I started cleaning a bunch of coated bullets last fall. Soak maybe ten - fifteen minutes, then I'd tumble them for an hour or so in a vibratory tumbler in some Lyman green treated media I bought by mistake.

Without the vinegar bath it takes three to four hours tumbling to get to the same condition. I'd avoid tumbling too with any of the plastic-tipped bullets.

Just put them in the case tumbler and they will come out clean and new with no damage.

I've cleaned a bunch using the tumbler. But if you don't want to go that route your gonna have to wipe each slug down with a damp cloth and mild solvent.

Why not just polish with a soft cloth and shoot them as they are.It will be thin coated after wiping and shouldnt deposit much of anything in the bore followed by butches for a cleaning solvent.

Old thread, but does anyone else have input on this?
I used a vibratory tumbler. Bought a bunch of moly bullets maybe when this post started or before.
Fill the tumbler with rice. Did a beautiful job. Throw the rice out when you are done as the rodents love it.

Just noticed the post above but maybe dumping the rice when done is a helpful tip.

I jumped whole hog into moly when it first started to be popular. I used a spray-on and followed all directions to the letter. My results were disappointing so I gave up on it, but had quite a number of bullets already coated. I settled on dumping them in acetone for a while and then 'shuffling' them in an old thick bath towel to remove the finish. Fairly quick and effective.

Bar keepers Friend and hot water in the wet tumbler goes a great job. I've tried all the others an this worked best.

By chance was there any moly contamination on the inside of the tumbler?

Thanks

I did quite a bit of testing, search for a thread under my name for removing moly from bullets. You will be pleasantly surprised at how easy and fast it is.
