Remington XP100 Cal. 8mm Mauser

Picked up a Remington XP100 cal. 8mm Mauser from estate. Has anyone ever heard of or seen / shot one of these? It's beautifully done, and Serial Number dates it to 1969. Any information is appreciated. I'm still researching it, since the caliber is a real surprise!

I have a couple K98’s in 8mm. Wonder what recoil is like. Have shot 30/06 in Encores and it wasn’t that bad. Bet that is a wicked deer killing machine. Let us know how it shoots.

I remember back in the day, one of the outdoor magazines carried several write-ups of a possibly famous hunter killing big game with a XP100. Seemed crazy for the time, moose, bear, and such with a handgun. I wonder if that may have inspired heavier cartridges like this one. jd

Never saw an 8mm Mauser chambered XP, but not surprised either. Will it eject a loaded round? Some OAL’s you will have to remove the bolt to get it out.
I have seen some interesting cartridges in XP’s over the years. Some folks took undesignated 700 actions a built some pistols. Cool one a fellow built some years back was a 45-70 magazine fed 700 pistol.
Some cartridges most consider a rifle cartridge, are just as good as a pistol, 308 and 7-08 come to mind, the 30-30 in a TC is no slouch. I know a few guys with pistols in the same caliber as their rifles, just because they like the cartridge.

This XP more than likely was done by a custom gunsmith. I highly doubt that the Remington custom shop would've had chambered an XP in 8mm Mauser. Plus the stock doesn't look like the standard Remington custom shop walnut stock.

The scope looks to be a Burris long eye relief. I'm going to guess a 2-7. I had two of those scopes over the years. One was mounted on my XP in 7BR, and the other scope on one of my Contender barrels.

Are you sure it is chambered for the 8mm Mauser. Quite a few of the XP's were re-barrelled to a cartridge called an 8 mm IMSHA used in Silhouette matches.

There were people that actually took elephants with TCs. I think they were 45-70s.

They were actually custom made in various shops for 458 Win Mag, on down. I had a picture of a guy in MA shooting a full length 458 Wam in an XP.
I owned a few XPs, that I shot in competition, including a 7-08 and a 6.5-08. That is not a Remington custom shop XP. It looks like it is a shop built hunting gun, note the safety. Were it a competition build, the safety and counter balance weight would be removed to make weight. The 14" barrel is there.
I have seen 7x57 XPs with a chamber cut but not an 8x57, it would be a hand full with 8x57 rifle loads. Odd that the chamber is not cut to allow extract and ejection of a loaded 8x57 round. If it were for an 8x57 it should have a v cut on the right, just above the loading port rail. Absence of the V notch would indicate it may have been made for a shorter version of an 8mm round, unless the intent was to remove the bolt to unload a loaded round without firing it. The XP is a short action. A push button bolt release on the left side may well indicate a bolt pull to unload.

Did you get anything else with the gun, brass, dies, etc?
