Remington XP-100

I will soon be acquiring a friends XP-100 Rifle that was giving him a challenge in the accuracy department. I'm now putting my feelers out to try to find a direction to go with it. My first thought is to rechamber from 17MK4 to 17FB and leave as-is. My gut says that will fix the accuracy problem. My second thought is to part out the Lilja barrel and H-S Precision stock. That would give me a really neat single shot platform to work with. Being a varmint hunter, this would make for a really nice light varmint rat patch setup. Anyways, looking for direction guys.

Howdy !

Sounds like the XP “ rifle “ action has .378 bolt face.

For a walking varminter, a .222 would be pleasant to shoot; and super accurate.
A “ Duece Mag “ would be cool beans, too…. but brass would be harder to source.
Everybody and their grandma shoots .223. Nothing wrong with that, if “ me too “ is alright with you.

My best friend just recently assembled and XP pistol, using a factory “ Zytel “ stock, and factory trigger assy. His barreled action came to him with a .17 MK4 barrel.
He has shot NE Indiana groundhog for decades, utilizing .224” cal; and some 6mm cal cartridges. Try as he might to talk himself into shooting .17 cal, his past groundhog
shooting influenced his decision making; and he opted to go with a factory take-off .221 FB barrel.

We both have preferred shooting the Hornady 55SX in medium-capacity .224’s like the .22-250, .220 Swift; and my “ .22-35 Remington “ wildcat. However….. for a smaller capacity case like the .221FB, and given his shorter handgun barrel; he is considering going with the 50SX for this application.

I would imagine you would be going after rock chucks with your new build ?
These same SX bullets might also work well, should you choose a .224” cal rifle application ( IMHO ). The smaller capacity .224” cal cases are what 50 & 55SX were designed to perform well with, their .009” thin jackets giving great terminal performance @ the velocity levels the smaller capacity .224’s can achieve.

I wouldn't want to hunt down 17fb brass or add CCI400/rem 6.5 to the component shelf. I would go 17/223 if it is1/9 twist barrel. Squirrels to rock chuck rifle(throw in the occasional coyote) you can load down to FB, can't load up the FB to 17/223.

24" straight pipe in .221 Fireball with zero free bore. Done deal!! Makes bug holes on demand that can and will be covered with a dime.  You know you want one. :D:D
I "had" shoulder issues when trying to "stretch" to sight thru the scope with my LER fitted XP. Shipped the action out and had it fitted with an "engraved" .221 Fireball 24" straight pipe.
Not too long later, the shoulder issue went away.
Still looking for another XP action to build another rifle for my "20 MGM" Wildcat.
Not thinking that will be happening any time soon.
Did drop a dummy "20 MGM" Wildcat round in the XP action, closed the bolt and it operated as SMOOTH AS SILK!!! Not too bad for starters.

I have 4 xr100 rifles which are basically the same as an xp100. the difference is, a xp100 started out as a pistol and an xr100 started out as a rifle, they are a great "rat patch setup" solid bottom receiver. 1/2" shorter than a rem. 700 action. perfect for single shot single feed which is my favorite way to shoot. If you can't get it to deliver the accuracy that you want, remember "it's just a barrel". don't waste time on it. as a high volume shooter you will get used to putting on a lot of barrels. I am not a 17cal. fan but, if you are going that way I like the 17fb. but that action is perfect for a 20tac. if you go with a shorter cartridge like the 17fb or vartarg you can have ejection issues.

I wouldnt even think if using 6.5's in a MachIV or fireball. Any VT or Fireball brass CZ kid makes on here will work or P.M me I can make some.
I've witnessed a MachIV shoot literally one hole with 7.5's, AA2230 and 20gr V-nightmares

Do it all w superior ballistics, terminal speed, wind bucking and good pill choice....20 Prac. Minimum twist is 11 but in case you get a honey hole way fer out there, do a 9 tw for some Bibs or ?? 50s.
Didn't hit Post this morning

Just curious why the rifle won't shoot now? Most Lilja barrels I've seen are v accurate.
And a short single shot action like that, belongs in the fireball family....whether a 17, VT or the original 221. Match made in heaven for the g squirrels eating all the alfalfa here in Oregon.

I'm just passing on what I have heard and know. Not my rifle yet but I hear you on it being a Lilja. I think a rechamber will solve the problem as I mentioned.
