I will soon be acquiring a friends XP-100 Rifle that was giving him a challenge in the accuracy department. I'm now putting my feelers out to try to find a direction to go with it. My first thought is to rechamber from 17MK4 to 17FB and leave as-is. My gut says that will fix the accuracy problem. My second thought is to part out the Lilja barrel and H-S Precision stock. That would give me a really neat single shot platform to work with. Being a varmint hunter, this would make for a really nice light varmint rat patch setup. Anyways, looking for direction guys.

Howdy !
Sounds like the XP “ rifle “ action has .378 bolt face.
For a walking varminter, a .222 would be pleasant to shoot; and super accurate.
A “ Duece Mag “ would be cool beans, too…. but brass would be harder to source.
Everybody and their grandma shoots .223. Nothing wrong with that, if “ me too “ is alright with you.
My best friend just recently assembled and XP pistol, using a factory “ Zytel “ stock, and factory trigger assy. His barreled action came to him with a .17 MK4 barrel.
He has shot NE Indiana groundhog for decades, utilizing .224” cal; and some 6mm cal cartridges. Try as he might to talk himself into shooting .17 cal, his past groundhog
shooting influenced his decision making; and he opted to go with a factory take-off .221 FB barrel.
We both have preferred shooting the Hornady 55SX in medium-capacity .224’s like the .22-250, .220 Swift; and my “ .22-35 Remington “ wildcat. However….. for a smaller capacity case like the .221FB, and given his shorter handgun barrel; he is considering going with the 50SX for this application.
I would imagine you would be going after rock chucks with your new build ?
These same SX bullets might also work well, should you choose a .224” cal rifle application ( IMHO ). The smaller capacity .224” cal cases are what 50 & 55SX were designed to perform well with, their .009” thin jackets giving great terminal performance @ the velocity levels the smaller capacity .224’s can achieve.
