Remington Truing Question

Can you test to see if a Remington action is straight or not? Like if it needs truing or to leave it alone? I’m running a remage criterion barrel on an untrued Remington short action in .260 Rem. Want to see if I’m wasting my time. Thanks for the help.

FYI I am not a smith!! Got a great gunsmith who seemed frustrated when I gave him a remage barrel, but is doing the work anyway.

Yes it can be checked quite easily. I dont think youll notice a difference with the savage setup on there so its just a personal preference and a mind game thing. If youre having a gunsmith do the work why not let him put a barrel on it right after he trues it up? That way theres no doubt in your mind and he'll do a better job on it by doing it the way he prefers?

It’s going to be a PRS rifle, and I wanted quick change, no hassle when I burn it up considering it’s in .260. Might ask him to true it though. You can’t do the threads bc it a remage correct? Only receiver face and make lug contact?

Ask these questions of the gunsmith who is doing the work. If he doesn't answer your questions, to your satisfaction, take it somewhere else.

So that’s my issue. He’s an awesome smith and does great work, but he just wants to make me happy so he’ll do work even if he doesn’t agree with what I want. I was just asking on here bc when I told him about a remage set up I could tell he seemed frustrated.

I’m not as well versed in the ins and outs of gunsmithing that’s why I was asking. Thanks guys for your advice. I’ll probably talk to my smith and do a full true/blueprint/ barrel job much to his happiness and most likely to mine as well.

let him do it right with a good barrel setup and when you burn that one up get another one put on. you still have to have the same tools to install a barrel. he could square the front of the action

To check if its straight you cut a test tennon on the lathe then screw the action on it put your indicator rod out the back and see how much runnout you have out the back. Dont expect "0" before or after

Never heard of that method before. I can see how that would never zero out.

Folks that true actions and have the know how to actually check their work would beg to differ. You should get gre-tan rifle's action blueprinting video. It is good for even non gunsmiths to understand why an action needs truing and how its done correctly. Also shows the tools it takes to do the job right. It wont be so bad next time you send that check to your gunsmith when you see what it actually takes to do it
