Remington Rivetless Extractor Moving in Bolt

Send it to LRI and have Chad put in a M-16 extractor. It will then be a Timex Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin!

Is that the extractor they have to open up the bolt face and then reduce it after making the cut for the slot? I had that done once. Never again.

When Area 419 was doing M-16 extractors. They did a top notch job also.
Do wish they would do them again!

Not sure what the problem is, but if it helps, this is Carlsbad's work. I am quite impressed with the quality and the turn-around time.

An extractor with the correct spring force will not move in the bolt face. You can see where the ends of the extractor reside. The spring tension holds them there. Some folks try and remove them to clean behind the extractor and reinstall the same one. If I take one out, a new one is going in.
Thanks to guys like you I carry two spares with me wherever I take my p-dog rifle (a .204). It has had about 1K rounds shot thru it since I carefully removed my factory extractor, cleaned behind it and put it back in, and it is still working fine.

I've got my needles in my 700 travel repair kit with the spare extractors, and I'm anxiously waiting for the factory one to fail so I can replace it. ;)

I'm sure you're right, but I will say, if you cannot get a replacement, I would not hesitate to try just removing long enough to clean and popping it back in, as I cannot see that you have anything to lose by trying.

I haven't had to do that with a .473 extractor yet. Maybe they respond differently, though I can't see why they would.

The problem that I had was that the smith would open up the bolt face more than was needed, install the grove for the extractor and then put a reducing washer that would work its way loose. I think that opening up the bolt face and then reducing it with a "glue in place" washer is stupid.

M-16 vs Sako extractors? How does a smith decide? I guess M-16 gets a big nod due to availability, what else?

Extractor discussion

The above is a recent discussion that might help.

You should be able to decide yourself what extractor is put in. I leaned towards the M-16 as it is pinned.

Mom used to pin stuff to me when I was very little, I guess it just stuck.

Yes, a rivetless Model 700 extractor will rotate but it should take some effort. I was shooting my Viper Drop Port benchrest rifle recently at a match. This action uses a Remington 700 rivetless extractor. I noticed some grime on my bolt face so I took a cleaning patch and twisted the patch back and forth to clean the bolt face. When shooting the next target, my fired round would not extract. I put the rifle aside and grabbed my other rifle to shoot the target. Afterwards, my gunsmith, who was also shooting the match, looked at the extractor and saw it was out of position. He was able to rotate it back into position and fixed the problem.

Would you trust that if you just paid $10,000 for an elk hunt?

Yes, I would. My benchrest gunsmith said it was good to go and I respect his opinion. After my gunsmith fixed it during the match, I shot the rifle for the rest of that day (probably another 70 or 80 shots) and no problem. I’ve shot the gun several times since that day and all is still good.
