Remington Rivetless Extractor Moving in Bolt

I have a Remington 700 magnum bolt face. I went to the range today and it would not extract the fired case.Tried another and it did the same thing. Tried cleaning it with a brush and then pushed on it with a small screw driver. It move counter clockwise and snapped into place. Then it worked fine. Question is, should the extractor move in the bolt face? I would hate to be hunting with the rifle and have this happen. Should the extractor be replaced? If I can find one. Brownell's only has the one with a rivet.

If it moved once, probably will again.
A guy on eBay had 17 extractors recently, they sold quick.
Maybe watch ebay and here and the other gun forums.

I have to believe somebody will make extractors again since there’s so many 700’s and 40x’s out there.

I love Rem 700's but I hate their extractor system.

While an expensive option, I had a Sako extractor system installed on a few of mine that were giving me problems - no more problems.

PS: Tried replacing the factory one and the problems kept reappearing so I went the Sako route.

Since mine freely slide, I assume they are supposed to.

CORRECTION: Only the one in my .204 slides pretty easily. Checked one in a .473 bolt (.243, .308, etc.) and does NOT slide easily.

I carry a spare or two at all times but have never actually needed to replace one. They sometimes get bits of brass behind them and quit extracting. I use a sewing needle to carefully remove the extractor, clean out the track and replace. I know people say to never put one back in but if you are careful not to spring it during removal, I cannot see why not. Anyway, I have some that have worked flawlessly for many, many rounds after such cleanings.

I cannot see where OP said what SIZE extractor he needs. Also, the guy on eBay does not say what SIZE he is selling. Not sure how this is gonna work out.

Is this a new problem with this rifle, or did the extractor always move around in the bolt?

Something aint right here. As far as I know, all Remington 700 mag (.535") extractors are riveted. Standard (.473") and small (.375") are spring type. Early standards and smalls were riveted too. .338 Lapua are a mini 16 type. The ebay ad is erroneous. Midwest does show a standard spring type for standard and mag calibers but I think the specs are a typo. The part number they show is a standard .473". Check your bolt nose. Is there a rivet hole in it? Has it been "bubba'd" by others? Pictures are a great help.

Have a few other Remingtons with this type of extractor. Never had a problem before. This is a used rifle. This happened once before and had been working fine. Do not see a rivet.

An extractor with the correct spring force will not move in the bolt face. You can see where the ends of the extractor reside. The spring tension holds them there. Some folks try and remove them to clean behind the extractor and reinstall the same one. If I take one out, a new one is going in.

In your 4th picture, #0588, almost underneath the ejector. Is that a hole? Is there a rivet busted off in it? Not clear from your pic, bit I would hazard a guess that the original extractor is gone and someone tried to fit a std size part, OR the extractor is busted and allowed to rotate its mortise, OR someone didnt bother to put in the rivet, OR......
Should look like this:

I'm with the rest here. That is a riveted extractor bolt. Either yours is broken and the rivet gone or someone has installed a rivet-less extractor in it and if so it won't be retained properly and will have issues.

Interesting, I've never seen one like that. Dimple to help keep the rivetless from moving and in place?

That has always been what I assumed. All of my rivetless Remington's have it.

If a person compares the bolt nose of a riveted and rivetless Remington bolt, they will see the rivet is located to a more clockwise position than the dimple.

In my opinion in the photos referenced above, the rivet would have been much easier to see. What is actually seen is the dimple.

If his is a riveted bolt, they did a masterful job of blending the rivet head.

My Surgeon bolts that have Remington extractors have that dimple and a nub on the inside. They use electricity to make that feature.

It is a dimple. I also have a bolt with a rivet and that is not what this is. If I could find an extractor, I will replace it.

Send it to LRI and have Chad put in a M-16 extractor. It will then be a Timex Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin!
