Remington no primary extraction

Evening fella's, I don't play with Remington rifles much and well pretty sure I picked up someones Redheaded stepchild! I did know it had some problems but hey what better way to learn these things. First off the bolt took a mess of effort to close as well as a total pia to extract brass, checked with a Go gage and it was about .003" too short..... hand reamed and cured the hard to close issue but the primary extraction was still not there. This rifle is 100% box stock so I'm going to say Remington let this one skip the test fire station!

When I push the bolt forward I get a .023-.025" gap and when it's pulled back it's a gap of .038-.040" so I'm pretty sure I know what the cause is but I also know my limitations and soldering is not a stong point of mine so thought I would ask your thoughts and opinions on ways to correct this but I'm pretty sure I'll need to find someone who I can have correct the bolt handle being if I recall the gap should be around the .010-.015" area, with the knowledgeable folks here maybe someone could point me in the right direction?

Thank you in advance for the help and advice you can offer.

Remingtons are quite common to have extraction problems search the forum for threads about this problem there are several members here that do repair these

338 Dude I'll just throw this out there but seems my search skills rather suck! I did find some threads that pointed to Dan but I had the blinders on looking for primary extraction but found his name a mess when I just searched bolt handle.

senderoll I appreciate the info and I will for sure get with him, there are a lot of things I can do BUT I learned a long time ago it's most times cheaper to let someone do a job over winging it lol. Thank ya!

After looking at your post I just looked for a minute or two and didn’t find exactly what I was looking for I will continue to search the most popular gun Smith I see I know his name by heart is Dusty Stevens he would definitely steer you in The right direction

Good chance this one has been "trued" by an amateur and the lugs machined back significantly. Check the lugs.

I know the guy who bought it and he did have the barrel threaded but that's it and he gave me the box of shells he was shooting and had 3 left so not many rounds on this one! it's an RR serial number and I have an action I bought last year new for a project and it's just as bad. If this one was trued up there is only about 20% lug contact..... it came from Remington like this and I'll bet you $3 they didn't proof fire it.

RR actions are usually a lot better in lug contact than the older ones, but they sub contracted bolt handles casting to a new company and they are gawd awful for primary extraction. Best bet is to replace it with a PTG handle.

The bolt handle gap is just one part of the picture. To measure primary extraction, you'll need to put a dial indicator on it.

The Remington has a primary extraction of about .090 to.100 so have you measured to see how much primary extraction you actually have or just measured the gap? You should be getting around .050 to.060 of primary extraction which in most cases is enough to break the case free of the chamber. My Barnard works with about .050 of primary extraction. I know it's popular on this forum to resolder your bolt handle or send it to "Dan" to have it tig welded to get that last .020-.030 of primary extraction, but first look at some other things to see if you have a problem somewhere else before tearing your bolt apart. See if there's a burr on the chamber mouth or maybe just a rough chamber. I have seen Remingtons with no primary extraction at all.

Thanks for the video! I had seen it before but couldn't find it when I got home. When I get some time I'll break out an indicator and see what's there.

Guys thanks a mess for the advice, I've been contacted by a couple of folks about helping me fix the problem and will probably go with one of them as it would cost me 3X what it would cost to just send it off for me learning lol. Put in the order for a vise and wrench today so I'll tear into this thing, square stuff up and send it off to have a new handle put on. Again that you guys I appreciate the help.

Kirk

Just remember you cannot measure like that with a barrel on there. If you do and get more than .010 you got other issues

Yes sir, just waiting on the vise and wrench to get here..... decided it's time to stop borrowing things and just bite the bullet BUT I do have an action I bought I can play with and check the numbers.
