Remington model 78

Are the extractors the same in the model 78 as the older 700’s? Or are they proprietary to the 78?

I chambered a barrel for a guy many years ago and don’t remember. He had a mini kaboom and needs an extractor. I won’t have the rifle in hand until next month. He sent pictures but it’s hard to tell if it takes a rivet or not.

Thanks in advance.

Should be the same. The only thing different that I recalled was the finish and it was a cheaper rifle. A very nice rifle to build on if you got it at a good price. I would not pass on any 78. Nothing proprietary, just a different model 700 back in the day.

A shooter at Tomball has one, in 270. the stock looks like the same wood that the 788 used.

Mechanically, it’s a 700. One thing of note if I remember the Model 78 was not offered in anything but cases that used the .375 and .473 bolt face. No magnums.

Correct, mine was a 30-06, but Dave Tooley turned it into a 7 STW back when Layne Simpson came out with the story in Shooting Times magazine. Stupid move on my part was selling that rifle many, many years ago. That rifle was so accurate.
