Remington Model 7 ,upgraded)

In November I discovered the throat in my Remington model 7 was .137" to long after less than 300 rounds. I put a post on this site and wrote a letter to Remington. Remington replied with little interest.

I ordered a new 308, 1:12, 5C, barrel from Tim North at Broughton to finish out at 20". Monday I received the barrel. I trued the action, lapped the luggs and corrected a primary extraction issue. Tuesday I cut, turned, threaded, chambered, and headspaced the new barrel. Wednesday night I cut, crowned, polished, glass beaded, engraved, and installed the barrel. I also opened up the barrel channel for the slightly larger contour. I had already pilar bedded and glassed in the lug of the stock. The J lock was replaces and the trigger was replaced with a Jewell. Below are two photos of what I have come up.

Sweeeet rifle! It's hard to beat a well crafted, short barreled SS Remington. I've been thinking about having something like that built for my wife, except in 7-08. How does it shoot?

I have always liked the Model 7. My sister now owns my last Model Seven chambered in 260 Rem.. It was the only rifle in my safe that she could handle as short as she is and that is how she ended up with it. Had I kept it I would have probably done something similar to your project. Well worth the effort I'm sure.

Just did something similar....... Bought a new M7 in 300SAUM off of a forum. Got a good price but the bad news is that mine didn't shoot good at all. Took it to my gunsmith and we figured the stock might be the culprit. So I ordered a new one from McMillan, black and the same profile as original. The stock didn't fit, the mag barrel contour was bigger than normal, so back to the smith. While I was there I asked about getting it rechambered to a 300 wsm. Turns out that he had a new take off in 300 wsm from a 700. So I had him cut the barrel to 22" like original m7, recrown it, fit the stock, true the action and index it so it looked original. Now I have a 300 wsm with a 4.5x14 leupold on it that shoots less than 1/2" with factory ammo and weights 7 1/4 lbs. It's nice.

Veary pretty little rifle. Looks like it would be right at home in a big eastern wood lot or mountain rifle on top a ral high peak.

What are you going to use it for? What it the diffrence in the 7 vs the 700?

PM inbound?

Nat,
Looking Good.
Those Seven's are hard to beat for a packing rifle.
A Seven AWR stock will lighten it up a bit also.

I shot the abobe model 7 today. The loads from the previous barrel showed to much presure signs and the remainder were pulled.

The loads with Win748, H4895 and Varget all shot sub 1 moa. I will continue working on some loads with both the 150 Swift Scirocco and 150 Nosler Accubond. When I get some loads I like I will post some targets.

Thats a damn fine looking rifle. Im waiting on a MCM stock for my 20incher as well. I'd be interested to see how your H4895 loads run.

I took a week off from work to deer hunt/fill the freezer. The above listed model 7 now has 6 deer to its credit. I have not had the time to work on loads like I want to. The Swift Sciroccos load that I shot in the old barrel were too hot for this new barel. The Nosler Accubonds shot better. I am currently shooting 150 Nosler AB ahead of 47. grains Varget and Wolf LR Primers, LC Match brass. They shot a .25" knot sized group at 100 yds.
