300 Jarrett Barrel

I have a like new 300 Jarrett barrel that was only shot by Jarret during load development. The barrel is blued with a muzzle break and has Jarrett Rifles engraved on one side along with 300 Jarrett. After having Jarrett build it for me I latter decided to have the rifle rebarreled to a 257 Weatherby. It was cut/threaded for a Remington action. I no longer have a use for the barrel and want to sell it? Can it safely be reused and put on another Remington action?

It can, but will need to be head spaced for the new action.

So when you go to sell it remember its a chromemoly 30cal used barrel that needs rechambering and refinishing.

Kenny makes his own barrels in his shop in SC. He is (like most gun makers) anal about quality. I remember seeing that equipment set up in Texas before he bought it. Very interesting. His rig has a setup (that I can't adequately explain) that ensures the twist of the barrel is accurate. I'd keep that barrel in case I ever wanted to use it. Kenny always loved and pushed the .300 Jarrett, so I can just hear him selling you on it now.

Just can not see building/ returning to a 300 Jarrett at my age so I will sell it. The barrel was accurate with the test target showing 180 grain cloverleafs. From the messages from the members above it does not seem to much of a problem to install it on an action which would give someone a very nice barrel for a build

Just remember the sidebar guys wont have their opinions vetted in public so they cant be wrong. It is less than a crapshoot that barrel will fit on another action. Youll have thread pitch issues, tenon length issues and headspace issues due to it being installed on a trued action. Remember a properly fit tenon length will be around .010 length from the bolt- that barrel installed on a non trued action could have (will have) way too much space plus the headspace will be off from the trued up bolt face and front ring. Id be willing to bet that barrel wont fit 2% of the remingtons out there safely without lathe intervention.

IMHO,
That barrel is worth a good bit less to me than a new blank($330ish). Should you ever sell that rifle, and that day will come for you or your family, the original Jarrett barrel would make for a FAR more valuable package.

That's funny Butch. I met Harold with Kenny on a trip to south Texas to deliver a rifle Kenny built. I was told Harold built the equipment himself, but don't know if that is true. He was a trip. The most memorable event was riding with Harold to check his cyanide poison coyote sets. Harold had a range with a life sized elk and deer cut out of boiler plate. As well as I remember the elk was at 700 yards, but don't hold me to that. Harold stepped out of his truck with a 7x57 he built and with a cold bore off hand shot hit that elk. He coached me a while and I finally got frequent hits with my 280AI off hand. Kenny always said that Harold taught him and got him started building rifles.

Back then, Kenny was a "time of flight" guy - he wanted speed. He came up with the .220 Jaybird (time consuming for brass creation and no better than a 22-250 AI) and he built me one as a surprise (I didn't order it) - the real surprise was the throat was toast after 300 rounds. But back then Kenny used Hart barrels for 22 to 6mm. I don't think he gave a minutes thought to barrel life.

I guess Kenny got that stuff running good. Kenny's health has been terrible for years and I think his son Jay runs the place now. To me, he is way over priced these days, but his shop is interesting with the equipment to make his own actions. I believe he makes his own stocks too.
