Remington model 40-X

I won this 40-X at an online estate sale and recently picked it up after the 10 day "cooling off" period. I got a chance to look it over and it really looks good. Stock and metal are fine.

Thanks, guys!

I had a chance to make a quick stop at the range. I was able to zero the rifle and shoot a 5 shot group before I had to leave. Five rounds at 50 yards with Eley black box match--.445"

I'm wondering how much the cheap Chinese BSA scope is affecting the precision. Surprisingly, even after being shipped across the country, the scope was nearly zeroed at 25 yards (maybe 1/4 minute to left off (with Wolf match extra), with elevation right on). I also didn't have a chance to clean the bore, which might have been a good thing.

I feel that with some additional ammo testing and maybe a better scope, this rifle is capable of more. Also, there was a moderate cross wind, which I didn't attempt to correct for and which may have caused some horizontal dispersion.

It's hard to believe, but until a few years ago, those stocks were getable from Numerich for 60 some bucks. I wish I'd bought three or four of em when I got mine.

That is one nice rifle, and it shoots. jd

Story of my life...I'm always at least a day late on those good deals.

One of the posters on the Sniper's hide forum suggested that a more accurate method of measuring group size was measuring the outside edge of the grease ring and subtracting the bullet diameter. I tried it and got a slightly smaller group size...

.457-.215 = .242"

Most of my rimfires shot their best groups after running several rounds thru it. I think it has to do with laying down the lube of whatever bullet you're using. Try the group after running about 15 thru it and see if it's better
